500mm lens/2x converter issue I have a Canon XT. I recently bought an inexpensive 500mm lens. I know this is an inferior grade lens and hold no delusions of great quality. It requires a t-mount adapter and the lens works fine on my camera until I try and use my 2x converter with it, then I get a "01 Error" message.. (problem with camera communicating with lens) Canon said to clean the contacts and buy their model 2x converter, since their is electrical contacts on this lens Canon is just blowing my off, the lens manufacturer was of no help either. Again, the lens works fine alone, the 2x convertrer works fine with all my other lenses, it is just the combination of the two that causes this message. Actually the reason I bought this was to use with my 2x converter with it and have a 1000mm capability. Any ideas and/or suggestions?

There is a switch within the mount on the camera that is tripped by the lugs of the mount on the lens (about 3 o'clock as you look at the camera mount). When that switch is tripped, the camera expects to have electronic communication with the lens. If there is no communication, then you get the error. On the T-mount, the lug on that side is shorter than standard, and so it doesn't trip the switch. This the camera works fine with it. But when you mount the teleconverter, the teleconvert's standard lug trips the switch. I have a Russian mirror lens that I use with Canon tele-extenders. I get around this problem by only partially turning the teleconverter onto the camera. Care must be taken since this is a very insecure connection. My mirror lens has its own tripod mounting ring. I mount it to the tripod and fully mount the teleconverter to it. I then mount the camera to the TC with a half turn, keeping the camera's neckstrap around my neck so that if it comes off it won't fall to the ground.

Oops. I don't have my cameras handy, 3 o'clock (right side) may be 9 o'clock (left side).

There have also been suggestions with some tele-converters to put some tape over some of the contacts. This will trick the camera into still being able to auto-focus. I can't remember which contacts, but in this case I wouldn't think it would matter and then you could have a solid connection mount wise.

The taping the pins won't work in this situation. With the switch in the mount tripped the camera wants to communicate with the lens. Taping the pins (just the last 3 on the lens side) is a workaround to make autofocus work when the effective lens aperture with the teleconverter is smaller than f/5.6. See http://www.fredmiranda.com/TipsPage/ Tip #1.

Thank you for the correction Jon. Makes absolute sense. I wasn't thinking it through completely. Sorry for the confusion.
