Photography Question

Matthew M. Sciortino

EDITORS PICK

"The "Editor's Picks" are simply recently uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found interesting, eye-catching or beautiful."

what does "recently added" mean when talking about editors pick - what type of time frame are we talking?

  "recently added"

The explanation above is absolutely incorrect. One of my Editor's Picks was uploaded no less than thre years ago.

Maybe the Editors ar reviewing all the galleries and re-judging. It's a puzzlement!

do I have to enter a contest to even qualify for editors pick? or is simply uploading the pictures qualify me?

There are several topics on this subject. Just read down the list to get more information.

Editors picks are the first pull for the contest. They are what you would call "runners up". That is why old photos you had in the contest now have the buttons. Because those photos were in runners up that month you submitted them.

Here is what BP says about Editors Picks:

EFPs are the first round picks for the contest.

"The "Editor's Picks" are simply contest entries that have moved on from round 1 of the contest judging. These images are found to be interesting, eye-catching or beautiful to the judges. In the past, if you wanted to find new photos for discussion, you might go to "New Arrivals" or "Current Contest Entries". The problem with that, though, is that this group is global and unedited - everything being uploaded to BP. The "Editor's Picks" gives you a selection of photos that will continue to the next round of judging. They are updated weekly."

I'm not so sure that they are the "first" picks,as I had a finalist that was never designated as a "EFP.

And, to repeat my response above, I posted one of the pictures, recently designated an Editor's Pick, to my gallery more than three years ago. It was never entered into a contest!

I don't want to upload it again and can't find its ID #, so check out "Erica" in my gallery and note the date.

Ron there has been a few problems with photos that were indeed EFP that didn't have buttons. It's a tech. glitch that has not been fixed yet.

John, don't know what to tell ya :-) BP says they are from contest entries. And pretty much all other evidence says the same. Every single one of my EFP buttons are from contest entries. Not one on a non entry. The same with all others I've talked to.

You all can draw whatever conclusion you want :-) But BP says they are contest entries and there is zero reason for them to lie about it.

Can a photo have a EFP and then they remove it later? Unless I have forgotten how many I had previously, one seems to have disappeared...?

Let's see if I understand this right:
"Editors picks are the first pull for the contest."
Does this mean that the BP administration (the "editors") are making an initial selection of photos, and the contest judges see these photos only and not all the entries?

Susan, thank you for the explanation on the EFP's. I was actually thinking they might have been photos that had merit, but were not moving on to the next level. So it's really nice to know that they "made the first cut" :)

Anne I don't know for sure, but I think the judges only come in after that first pull. I doubt they go though all the entries. There are close to 40,000 a month. Having them go through only the weeded down EFPs makes much more sense in terms of time.

I agree with some of the answer but like someone said I too had an editor's pick without having my picture in a contest. Im really lost but after that I pulled it into the contest.

But the theory of the judges judging just the ep is really wise.

Ok BP friends... hold the phone. Reading the responses is confusing me even more. My impression was... if a photo was chosen for the EP then it automatically moved into the "pot" so to speak to the next round. My question is where are the EP'S list and when do they do the judging? Getting chosen is only exciting if there is a possibility of moving on to the next round right????

Hi Erika, you are correct. An image that doesn't have an EFP wasn't chosen in the first round of judging and will not go any further in that month's contest :)

EFPs can be viewed under the pull down menu "Photos", then select Editors Pick. I think they are shown in a random arrangement. To keep paging forward, use the "reload" button. If you click "view all new entries" it will then take you to all new uploads to the site, not EFPs.

Hope that helps and good luck!

There multiple rounds to the contest

Runners up (EFP)
Semi Semi Finalist
Semi Finalist
then... Finalist.

Hence the reason the EFP means little to me, In fact it makes me feel that the photos on my site that dont have a button are loosers or something. Most I never enter into the contest. So when others look at my gallery they are thinking the same thing, "oh, this one didn't get a EFP must not be good." I have more than 1000 in my gallery 900 not showing and can only have 300 possible EFP unless I buy up. The EFP doesn't make much sense to me, its not a winner, not sure what it is suppose to mean. So my enteries are part of the half of the 30000 entered a month, not sure thats worth tooting my horn about. Again I would like to turn them off in my gallery, I find them annoying.

I am sure all are the contest entries are looked at each time. About half cut each round until it gets to the finalists. It would be very easy for them to go to past runners up pages and click the link to mark them as EFP from long time ago. Most of the pages are still there but are not available for anyone but staff to look at. Just getting a EFP only means it was one of the half picked in the first round of the contest.

Well said Vicki :-) I'd like to turn them off too. I still don't get why photos that make the first cut of a contest get something. What about the Semi/Semi and then the semi round?

Yes I know, people don't like me because I complain too much about this.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell us how wrong we are to complain ;-)

Figured I'd save that someone the trouble:

"Susan F. you complain too much! Now go out and enjoy life and don't worry so much about the contest"

Good advise! I think I'll do just that :-)

Just wish BP hadn't said they were redesigning them and then not follow through.

I just wish it was something like the members favorite that goes above the photo when someone likes it. Small and simple but not overwhelming in the gallery and only shows when you pull I up large.

Not everyone shoots for the contest.

"Not everyone shoots for the contes."

True, but why enter the contest if you aren't shooting for it? I'm seriously not trying to be a wisenheimer here. Just curious why anyone would enter the contest if they don't want to win.

I know of BPers who take pride in the fact they have their own "style" and get somewhat upset when their "style" isn't recognized.

I have always considered the contest pretty straight forward. If you want to win, shoot for the contest. Period.

With that said, I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago. I shot midday because that's when I was there. Those aren't getting EFP. I always live in hope a photo taken midday might get a nod, but realistically I know that's not likely to happen. I entered those shots mostly to just share.

Ok, I'm tired and totally not making sense. I'll shut up now :o).

But I don't take it back :D.

The only reason I enter the contest is to get the photos seen. There is nothing on this site that promotes anything but the contest as far as that goes. I have suggest time and time again a section to post photos out of the contest. I deleted my whole gallery with winners and finalist too at one time, they don't mean anything, its not what I shoot for or the goal I want to achieve, far from it. Doesn't mean anything to me but unless you post out there, no one enters your gallery.

Here is a newbie's two cents: I like the EFP recognition. To me it means the photo had enough merit (subjective to this contest judging) to make it into the first round of the contest. Honestly, I like a little bit of recognition, cause not everything I do is so great. I'm still learning. I work and have family and volunteer obligations. (yes, I'll have some cheese with that whine!) I'm sure I'd improve faster if I only had more time :) *or less people wanting stuff from me* I'm not complaining, it's just my reality, probably like a lot of others. I see some galleries where every photo is a finalist or winner and looks like a pro whose been doing this for years :) I'm green with envy and wish I had unlimited time and funds..lol. I think the EFP makes the amateurs feel a bit better about their skills.

Vicki you make several good points; the first about photos not having an EFP being thought of as having no merit. On my images, I wonder what is wrong with the image. Is it a technical flaw? Can it be corrected or made better? The second point you make is that you have to enter the contest for others to see your gallery. That is largely true, but there is also a search feature and ways to browse photos by subject that will return results of all images on the site.

I would love to see a section where people could post for feedback. Is there one?

Susan F., the only thing I can figure why they choose the first round picks to get the EFP is that it shows members which photos are "in the pot" for the contest?

If you're looking for feedback just leave some for someone that you think has great photos... usually if you comment on someone's photographs they will look at yours and comment back. It may take a while to get any constructive criticism (you'll get a lot of "very nice" or "i like this one"), but if you leave enough comments you're bound to get some good ones back. You could also join a club to get feedback, that seems to work well.

I like the EFP, although i'd rather win.

Sharon it's so hard for me to behave but I'll try :-)

Susan S. when you ask about "feedback" do you mean a critique on a photo? There is a critique section here in the forums. You have to upload the image and then make the first comment, choose "critique" in the drop box.

But a lot of people (me included) are reluctant to give honest feedback for fear of upsetting someone.

There is a great group I belong too that will give honest feedback if you want it. It's the 101 photogroup. All the members are also BP members and we do monthly themes.

Susan F, thanks for the info on the critiques. I understand about critiques being a potentially "delicate" situation. I used to compete on a site where the monthly voting was done by the entrants. Some photographers left great feedback, others would leave you scratching your head or worse, piss people off. (can I say that?) I will check out BPs arrangement.

Even tho I like the EFP, I think the design should be different too. It looks too much like the other awards (except finalist).

How do I check out the 101 photogroup? Are you guys the ones who do monthly themes or challenges?

I too had EAFP on a photo then later I never got a button, however the day it appeared I printed out the page of EFP and know it should have a EFP button. I have written twice and have had no answer, Even though it doesn't have an EFP button I have proof of when it appeared and know it was an EFP

I would be nice if they gave a button for each round you get through in the contest. It's encouraging to see the Editor's Pick under your photo, but it would also be nice to see just how far your photo made it in the contest. Anyone else agree?

Jennifer, my understanding is that there are only 2 rounds -- EP means you made it through the first. Next, they award the "Finalists". The finalist round is what has everyone on the edge of their seats and as close to a computer as possible during the last week and 1/2 of each month. Then the winners are announced. There are no intermediate rounds between the EP's and the Finalists. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I enjoyed watching the rounds before they were hidden. It is fun to see how far a photo progressed. I have never understood why those links had to be hidden. I've been told by older members they would get emails from people asking why their photo got cut at certain stages and nonsense like that. If that's the case then I can fully understand why they fixed the rounds so we can't view them anymore.

Wow Sharon, I never knew that you could watch the rounds. That would have been fun!!

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but in the C&C thread, two members posted entries that don't have EFPs as their hope for a finalist (or at least there was one). You do have to have an EFP to go on to the next round, correct?

I wish they weren't hidden. If they really are hidden because people kept emailing asking why their photo didn't advance... well, it's just silly for people to do that. It's supposed to be a friendly contest, and can be sort of validating for some of us beginners. I know my confidence has been boosted by seeing the Editor's Picks under my photos. It gives me a nice push to keep snapping photos. I do think it would be nice, though, to see what levels your photos advance to.

Wow, I never knew all that either. I think it would drive me crazy to keep watching a photo of mine advance through the rounds only to be knocked out at the end. I wouldn't have the chutzpah to email judges to ask why it dropped out, but it would give me more gray hair than I could keep up with to not only check for new EP's for my current month submissions, but ALSO to be tracking last month's EP's through the rounds!

Susan, I don't think anyone chimed in on your earlier question---Yes, EFP means your photo has advanced in the first cut of the contest, and is therefore still in the running onto the later (hidden) stages Sharon described. No EFP means it did not survive the first cut.
(PS--in the Countdown Thread, you can choose to post your favorite entry, whether or not BP gave it an EFP... Great photos do get overlooked, and thankfully, re-entries the next month, or later, can pay off!)

I believe the choices of 'Editor's Picks' are inconsistent, and a nuisance and I see no reason for them, other than a business tactic by BP to please customers. I think the grey badge is enough, before a second place gold, etc...I'm content with the fact that I rarely get any EP's...
