Too general a question, and not enough info about yourself to make any kind of recommendation. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, Fujifilm, and Sigma all make high quality DSLRs, any of which may be a good fit for you.

Nikon uses CCD image sensors (that is what replaced film in cameras to pick up light basically). CCDs are cheaper and foound on a bunch of point and shoot digital cameras. Canon uses CMOS sensors which are usually more expensive but better because when the image gets captured, the CMOS sensor can do some algorithms on the image to make it even better quality (such as noise reduction and so forth)

The Canon is more money however. I started off with Nikon and they are making a name for themselves again. They are making these cheaper and lighter entry level and prosumer DSLRs to get people to buy a bunch of their lenses eventually and then thus keeping them in the Nikon circle. Their D2Xs body is their flagship (& the only one with a CMOS sensor BTW) and they have nothing else but "vapor ware" for a new pro DSLR area so you would be suck with a D80, D200 or the D2Xs for a while. Canon is releasing new models frequently that keep exceeding the previous version so you could always stick with Canon and feel confident that you could upgrade to a better model. They also offer full frame sensors.

Any camera over 8 megapixels will do you just fine so the D40x and the Rebel XTI should be your top 2 choices because the D40 is 6+ mpix only. (My Nikon D100 was a 6.3 mpix DSLR and is now discontinued. What bothers me is that Nikon made a "new" camera, ie the D40 and threw the same stuff in there from their large stock of 6 mpix guts it seems!) Way to push the envelope!

I usually recommend for first cameras, ones that I don't cost alot to begin with, but offer you all you need as you get used to all its options and gadgets available.
This was while you are getting used to handleing the camera, changing settings and lens, you don't risk dropping a new expensive one.
I recommend the D70/D70s alot now between 400/700 on Ebay.
it's a fun and easy to use camera, lightwieght and fast.
The Rebels would be computable.
This is just my thoughts,

** oh, and Tamron lens are cheper to start with other then big name brands such as Nikon/Canon to start with.

I got the Canon rebel xti and am very happy with it! More megapixels than the D30 and $450 cheaper too! Spend the extra money on lenses!!! there are many sites you can google to compare different cameras. I did a lot of research and the xti fit my budget and needs the best. Good luck!
