Photography Question

pulling my hair out getting a lense D80

New to photography would be an understatement for me F.Y.I.

I'm needing a lense for use in indoor basketball games and for also outdoor cheerleading. I would like to be able to zoom in on my subject as well and not get the entire setting.

Please make a suggestion for me with a budget of $800

thank you very much for sharing your time and knowledge on the subject!

Please, please stop pulling your hair out or the top of your head will soon look like the top of mine!

The best suggestion I can give you is to check out the offerings at KEH.com. They have an 80-200 F2.8 D MACRO ED in EX condition for $645.00. That is an excellent lens which should do what you want easily. With the crop factor, that gives you the equivalent of a 120-300 zoom, which should easily cover a basketball game or cheerleading. Don't worry about the quality of the product you get from KEH. I understand they have an excellent return policy but I have never had to use it, even on BGN rated goods.

  hair still coming out

I looked on their site but I don't see this lense... Would it not be located under digital lenses? If it isn't specified for digital will I be loosing anything? Any way to offer a direct link?

I do have something to confess, I bought a 18-200vr when I bought my camera but it has some trash in the glass so I'm sending it back but they have no replacement. Been reading since that purchase and was thinking I should have went with a more "specific" lense. Please don't be confused with my babble.

please forgive my ignorance

Hope the following link works. If not, just select Nikon Auto Focus then zoom lenses. It is not under digital lenses. Digital lenses will only work with digital cameras while film lenses will work with either digital or film cameras. You will lose some on the wide end (80mm will give the field of view of a 120mm) but will gain on the long end (200mm will give the field of view of a 300mm). This is due to the crop factor of the smaller than 35mm sized chip.

  one last little thing...

Why not one of the others in that same general area? I trust your judgement, if you say "this is the one" I'll pull the trigger on it. No need to go into details "wouldn't make any since to me anyway" just trying to make sure your not trying to save me a dollar when I could spend a bill more have have a much better lense.

Promise to leave you alone after this :)

I am not sure what you mean by "one of the others in that same general area". If you mean another lens I recommend this one because it is one of the finest zoom lenses Nikon has made (wish I had one) alongside the 35-70 2.8 D lens (which I do have and love). If you mean should you spend the extra bucks on one that is rated EX+ or LN-, I don't see that they are worth the money. Once upon a time I wouldn't order anything from them that wasn't rated at least EX+ but, through recommendations of other photographers I finally ordered something they had rated BGN. Couldn't tell any difference. Their rating system is so stringent they have things rated BGN that others would rate as excellent. If I remember correctly, my 35-70 was rated EX and the only thing I can see is that there was no case with it. I have heard of people buying BGN rated lenses and inspecting them to see why they are rated BGN and finally finding a slight scratch somewhere on the barrel or lens mount. Glass still clear as a bell. I would probably get the one they have for $665.00 since it has the hood and caps included.

You are not a bother. If I didn't want to answer questions I wouldn't come here.

I wasn't questioning the grade which KEH specifies their products, a friend has already mentioned the quality that is recieved from them....

I was questioning if that lense would be better than the others listed on the same page as the one you mentioned on their site "I found the one you are talking about without your link, it didn't work". On their sute, page 10 and 11 seem to all be the same lense to my blind eyes, I was just making sure if you had $800 to spend that is what you would get and not one closer to the max money spent.

I understand, you say this is the lense "I hope they can ship today' :)

Just about all of the lenses on those two pages are the same, just variations in grade or included accessories (caps, hood, etc. - some have them and some don't).About the only differences other than that are that the first one is internal focus, which may or may not matter to you. Doesn't really mater to me one way or the other. The last few listed are not "D" lenses, which mean they don't have the D chip which takes distance into consideration when calculating exposure. The one I suggested is the one I would buy if I were buying today. It has the D chip, ED glass, caps and hood. Good luck.

  thanks again for your help!!!

I chickened out last night to pull the trigger on it but said heck with it this morning and am going to get it. I called yesterday and it was too late to ship it out anyway.

Going to need a filter or two for it as well and would appreciate any recomendations. I would like one for just general lense protection and another for outdoor photography like a polorized filter. Any help on this subject? I was going to get both from KEH but they have like a hundred and you pretty much have to know what your looking for in the first place to identify what they have listed. The lense size is 77mm

For general lens protection, I recommend a lens cap. I know a lot of people will use a skylight filter to protect the lens but I never put a filter on my lens unless I want it to do something - like a polarizer. For that I recommend Hoya, Tiffen, B+W (very pricy). Just make sure you get a circular polarizer and not a linear.
