Photography Question

Photos become grainy when emailed

My photos look fine in photoshop and I save them for the web at 240ppi, but when I go to email them they become extremely grainy looking. I've tried playing with the ppi (up to 550) but that doesn't do anything. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance!!

Do you know if your email client/internet service is doing some type of compression or conversion? Are you including the files as attachments or drag-drop/pasting them into the body of the email?

If there is compression you'll want to find a way to shut it off -- or possibly ZIP any files you have before sending. If you are pasting to the body of an email, the program may convert your image to a file format it finds friendly, and may do other harmful resizing/compression. This could also be simply a preview.

Your best bet is likely sending as an attachment, and even then using some type of non-lossy compression (ZIP) so the files do not get altered without your hand in it ;-)

Most likely, automatic photo attachments for emails will apply downsizing and compression. If you know what program is doing this, there is probably a way to turn it off. Sometimes, email clients or servers might also do this, but I'm not positive that this happens. Attaching a file by browsing for it on the computer directly from the email program's attachment tool should attach the original file (and treat it like any other file; no compression).

Saving with PPI when not printing doesn't matter. It's all pixel number; it should normally be ~5x7 inches at ~90 PPI, but I prefer to think in terms of 1000x700 (or whatever) pixels. Downsize it yourself to your liking and save that as a small file you can email. (Or if you want, you can zip it like Richard suggested to send larger files.)
