Photography Question

What Camera is best for me?

I'm looking to upgrade to a Digital SLR, and i've been doing a fair amount of research on what camera would work best for me. But I would really like some help from people who have had experiance with the cameras. I'm looking for a camera that will be the best for action shots. I go to horse shows and such, but my camera now doesn't do great with action shots. So I'm hoping to get one that will work for me, the two main cameras i've been looking at are the Canon Rebel XTi, and the Canon EOS 5D. But if anyone has a better idea please all advice is welcome!
thank you

The 5D is obviously a more robust camera than the XTi, hence the much larger price tag. It has a larger sensor and a couple more megapixels, but there is nothing that necessarily makes it a better camera for action shots at horse shows.

If money is no object, then by all means, get the 5D. It's a great camera. But in the real world, you don't need to spend an extra $2000 to get great action shots at horse shows. The XTi will not disappoint you, and the $2000 you save could buy a very nice long lens to zoom in on the action.

If you are using any type of compact digital camera now for action shots, just about ANY digital SLR will be a huge improvement. Shutter lag is practically nonexistant, so when you press the shutter, it takes the picture and you don't miss the action.

I was a little wary of the price tag for the Canon EOS 5D, but I thought that if it is going to give me FAR better pictures at a horse show than the Rebel XTi then I would be willing. But if it isn't then i'm more than willing to go for the Rebel XTi!
Thank you for your help it is greatly appreciated!

Also you can look at the 20D or the 30D. There's only a few things where a change in camera will improve being able to shoot something like sports or action.
You should practice to get better at doing action. While somethings like frame rate can mean being able to get something, you can also throw a handful of money on the deli counter or just pay what you owe.
The rebel can do anything other models can do, but one thing about it for me is that it's a small sized body. And holding it doesn't feel good to me.
So your first priority should be to improve technique with whatever camera you end of buying.

Think about your shooting style, price tag and experience...

If you have decent fast lenses already then get the 5D hands down!

Otherwise, if you still have some slow entry level glass in your collection then I would suggest going with a Canon 30D (you can get them around $1k) and then going with 1-2 nice pieces of Canon glass!

Get maybe their 17-55mm f/2.8 IS for under$1000 on Amazon and then get yourself the 70-200mm IS telephoto for $1200 on Amazon.com as well!

Granted the 5D costs only like $2700 but for around $3200 you would get a camera body in between both of what you are looking for AND 2 AMAZING LENSES that would last you a lifetime that would never get replaced and would still hold a high resell value...

It all depends on your budget. Also you need to consider that some lenses out there that are great for action photography, could cost around the same or higher than the camera body itself. I Would opt for the Canon EOS 30D. It is fast, updated from the 20D and not as expensive as the 5D.

You are looking for a camera for action shots. That could mean you need more frames per second, to be able to shoot off a volley of shots when the horses are running the course (if that is what happens at horse shows...). Ask yourself, how fast is the action, and how many shots do I need to squeeze off to ensure I get a good one? As an example, professional sports shooters can run off a dozen or more shots on one a single golf swing or touchdown catch.

All of the mentioned cameras will capture wonderful images. All of them will freeze time.

5D - 3 fps
30D - 5 fps
XTi - 3 fps
1D Mark III - 10 fps

Of course, the Mark III is going to be a fairly expensive camera. The 30D will be more than the XTi, but gives you more fps. If you are happy with 3 fps, then the XTi might be a better choice than the 5D, because of price and the "crop" factor (the XTi giving you some "added reach" on your lenses). If you think you might be rough on the camera, then the XTi might not be the best choice, since it is a plastic body. I can't speak from experience on how durable the Rebel body is, but I can tell you that my 10D has taken a beating and still works like a champ.

I hope this all makes sense, for some reason I am just not very eloquent today!!! ;-)

I've looked around and asked questions, and everyone has been very helpful. I decided that for my very first Digital SLR I would go with the Rebel XTi! I went out and bought it and I'm overjoyed at the pictures I can take already! I can't wait until I actually figure everything out on the camera!
Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone who put their 2cents into my
question! It WAS helpful!
And David you were very right at the frames per second. I still can't get over how fast it is! At least compared to my older camera, its astounding!
anyway hopefully I'll be putting in some better more creative photos soon enough! thanks again!
