Photographing strobe lights at night

I am just learning night photography and have just been asked by a friend to take some night time pictures of our local police department's cars at night with the strobe lights on.
Any suggestions? I think I know enough to get acceptable photos but would like to do better so any guidance is welcome. I shoot with a Canon 20D.
Thanks in advance

  Hi Tracy,

My advice is to choose twilight conditions otherwise move to a well illuminated area. Best would be at a tennis court at night or mall parking lot.

I shoot a lot of emergency vehicles at night and I usually set my Nikon to shutter priority at 1/30 and my white balance to flash. The white balance setting will warm things up a bit since most of my night images include a TTL-BL fill from my SB-800 flash. The slow shutter speed of 1/30th will easily bring in the ambient light from street lights and emergency vehicles strobes. Oh, and my ISO is set at 400.

Good luck!

Ray

Thanks for the pointers, esp on the ISO setting. I would have had it set in the 100-200 range so I'll definitely bump it to 400.
