Editor's Picks

Have you noticed BP is putting medals under the editor's picks now? I just noticed. I think it's a great idea b/c it lets you know which of your images they like. It's great feedback. Thanks BP!

  That's a great idea!

I don't feel so bad about not being a finalist, yet. 24 of my last 40 entries have been picked, so I must be doing something right.

I think it's cool too. I haven't gotten a finalist in a couple of months so I enjoyed seeing a few more buttons :o)! Does anyone know how far back they go?

I guess I must be the only one who doesn't like them. The buttons are too big and are the same color as a first/second win.

They even stand out more than the finalist buttons, which I thought was supposed to mean something special.

Why not just have a small star or EFP under the photo?

Sorry, maybe I am just extra crabby today but I think it is bit much.

Ok before everyone starts yelling at me, let me get a drink first :-)

I do think they are kinda big and more noticeable than a finalist, but I am glad they are acknowledging photos that they find appealing. This helps us to improve. Sometimes it's hard to know what is good when you are the one that created it. Of course you're going to be biased. So it's good to know that professionals like it.

I agree Susan... I love the idea of us being able to see the CURRENT Editor's picks of ours... Keeps us from refreshing the EFP links all day looking for our images...lol

Come on.. I'm not the only one right??

Anyway, I like the concept but but think the badges are too bold.. Maybe a star under it would be good... Or change the color of the matting around the EFP.. The way it is now... When you get a finalist with one of these, you go from GOLD to SILVER.....

I appreciate BP thinking of ways to keep us in the loop... And it's a huge boost to see the recognition...

I am curious about how they choose which are badged... I have 1/2 my gallery in GOLD now... Many not entered into contest for over a year... And then a few I KNOW I saw in the EFP last month, had no badge...

I hope someone from BP can answer some questions for us...:)))

Thanks!!!!

I do like the idea of people getting recognition for EFP but something much smaller than the current button. I like the idea of a little star or something under the photo.

The only thing I would have changed when I first saw them was placing the medal under the photo rather than beside it. I see they've fixed that. Bob gives good advice :o)! Oh, and those that wants stars, did you notice the medals do have stars?? LOL

  Hi everybody,
I think the button for EFP is great, and I'm thrilled that BP is doing this for us. I also think it's probably a lot of work on their part, so I don't want to sound like an ingrate, but ... (!) I agree with Susan and Kara. A little blue star would be great. I'd bet money that they do change it after awhile.

As for how far back the EFP buttons go, I got one on an entry from 3 years ago!

Love the badges, but don't like the "Gold" badge competing with my three Second place wins. They are now lost in a sea of EFPs. BP needs to do something quick! I like the star idea. (Maybe just big enough to place EFP on it) The star can stay gold as long as it is small because it will be different then a finalist badge.

Just curious.. if one does not get a editors's pick on an image can you pretty much count that out as not getting a finalist too?..and has been or is the editors pick part of their elimation process for picking finalists?

From Jim Miotke, as posted in another Forum thread here recently:

"Hello friends,
The "Editor's Picks" are simply recently uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found interesting, eye-catching or beautiful.

In the past, if you wanted to find new photos for discussion, you might go to "New Arrivals". The problem with that, though, is that this group is global and unedited. It's everything being uploaded to BP. So you often see duplicate photos or an entire page of one subject, for example.

The "Editor's Picks" will give you a selection of interesting photos upon which you can comment.

We still have the "New Arrivals" and "Recent Contest Entries" categories, for those of you who want to see that global set of images. But for those of you who would like to just see the unique photos that catch our eye, the "Editor's Picks" will be just the ticket.

Enjoy!"

Thanks Bob, but Jim's post does not answer the question of if an image is not chosen for editor's pick then there is no hope for finalist etc. because they (bp staff) use that as the first round of picks in chosing or elminating finalists? Winning is not everything but I would not like to know until the end if they liked a photo or not. jmo:)

I'm glad they have done something to let us know if we have editor's picks. We don't all have the time to go through all the EPs. I had only seen a couple of mine in there when I looked at the EPs, but now I find that I have 27! It is encouraging to know that you are on the right track!

Diane Davis   I like the idea of designating which photos got EP's...I just went to my little gallery and found four that I had never seen while browsing EP's.
It's a big "medal" and I can see how it would look too similar to a win-something that is a much bigger accomplishment and should be obviously different.

For anybody who may take not getting an editor's pick the wrong way, I'm sure that not having one is not saying the picture isn't any good. Just like having a new dress on does not mean it's ugly because nobody said nice dress to you on your way to work.
Bob relayed that it's recently uploaded photos that got noticed. So that tells you that, amongst many other reasons, if a photo isn't recent, or they weren't looking thru the recent uploads at the moment you put yours in the server, they just didn't see it.
So relax and keep in mind they can't look thru all the photos for the contest, maintain all the duties for running a website, and look thru all recent entries at the same time.

It's nice to have the EFP's recognized in our gallery. I hope this doesn't sound like I am ungrateful...but PLEASE betterphoto...change the emblems to be smaller and maybe even a different color. I don't normally chime in here with my opinion, but I agree with the others and feel strongly about this.

To add to what Gregory is saying, last month's Grand Prize winner was a resubmission--it didn't get anything the month before. So, yes, they do miss photos that are worthy of EFP/winning!

I'm now more or less convinced the EFP is in fact the formerly-hidden "Runner's Up" pool from the contest judging process. (ie, the first elimination round of entries, historically going from say, 26,000 total entries, down to a group of 14,000-16,000 for next-level advancement, as I used to observe last year.) I've got EFP medals on images now, that haven't been entered into a contest once in 2007---they were 2006 or even 2005 entries, long before EFP was available on the BP menu!

When we used to be able to view/hack the "secret" web addresses for Runner's Up, it was a new web address every month---like the Finalist/Winners for past months are, now---so BP likely has the Runner Up groupings still intact, from every monthly contest, to tell who made Runner Up, and thus display an EFP medal now.

Regardless, I'm of the opinion EFP doesn't need a medal (and certainly not a gold oval one that looks far too much like a Contest Medal.) Why a gold medal just to say "You made it through the first culling of 50% of the 26,000 images!" ?

Gregory---to play devil's advocate, how long do you predict it will be, before someone asks "Why didn't my photo make EFP?" ;)

Just change the color to Bronze.

Olympic Medals....GOLD.....SILVER......BRONZE.

For me, it's nice to know some pictures I thought went unnoticed, were actually being considered.

Don't know how many EFP's there are every month though?....

Ross - great idea on the bronze!
I was very suprised to see these medals appear on my gallery, especially those on my last page of older images when I never even got a sniff of a finalist at the time!! So I'm guessing there's a lot of EFPs handed out and they must be based on some round of the judging, probably early on. Only problem with all these different types of medals is it's really highlighting the sub-par images in my gallery - ha ha!

Regardless of whether I personally like the look of the badges or the existence of them... I would like to see them be accurate. Since the EFP's have been running, I've been keeping a list of my images that I saw in there... I have "plenty" of badges and I'm not complaining about not having enough but I know of at 8 of my photos from April and May that were popping up regularly in the EFP yet they didn't receive the badge...(and I haven't gone to the trouble to check the ones that aren't currently on display in my gallery so there may be more) That's just inconsistent and doens't make sense....

Marie, makes it sound even more like it's based on judging rounds. Unless they went through everyone's galleries and made picks then it must be based on judging rounds at least for the older entries.

I agree with Marie Fields' comment (above). I have also been keeping track of those I happened to see in Editor's First Picks before, and now two of those do NOT have the gold medal, so that's confusing.

I like your drawings, Christopher! Ditto that they should be a different color and smaller than our Finalists and Wins.

But thank you for the positive idea, Editors! I think it is a good one...just needs the kinks worked out.
(And I hope they don't mean our EFP's are out of the running for the contest?)

I am really pleased to see this. So many of us who are attempting to raise our craft to higher levels need a little pat now and then, even if they don't make finalist or above. Making EFP and making it easy to find out about that little honor is a great morale booster. Kudos to the BP staff!

My question is, I already have 300 images showing, with as many as I have now, I will be out of room to even show them in a few months, I will have a gallery full of editors choice buttons, not all my favorite images to display. I wish there was a button to turn them off if you want to. I find them distracting to have this many. Would that be an option to turn them off? (tossing that one into space)

Maybe get a little tweaking of the EFP buttons going...:)

Again.. I love the concept.. And thank the BP staff for figuring out yet another way to keep people motivated... I know it's important, especially when you are just starting out at BP and need a an encouraging nudge from time to time..:)

That's true, Dennis IF they give them to photos that do not deserve any kind of recognition. If they are giving them out to good photos as something of a consolation prize because so many great photos are being passed over due to the sheer volume of entries then I don't see anything wrong with them.

My personal observation about the EFP (not the buttons!): When EFP first started I noticed a lot of photos that I would category as: happy snaps, scrapbook photos, family pets and nice images that just didnt get polished in post production. (standard levels, color and sharpening) We all know in 26000 photos they are out there.
My point is I originally expected to only see high quality finalist and winner potential photos in EFP. That was not the case a couple of months ago. BUT now. the quality of photos shown in EFP has reached a higher level craftsmanship. Im much happier with the EFP section of BP.

A few other BP friends of mine have said they think the buttons are a positive thing, also.

But we each counted, it seems like each of us got approx. a third of our total photos marked as EFP, right across the board. So Dennis' comment about little league trophies seems to have some truth to it.

I do think it is a nice thing, but since there is such a high ratio of them compared to our very hard-earned Finalists and Wins, the EFP's really should be less flashy. As it stands, they are more noticeable than the wins.

Let's go with Chris' pushpin! :)

Love your drawings Chris. I see you are multi talented :-)

I'd say to make it even smaller, just the pushpin even, without the banner.

I am still firm in not liking the EFP "awards". I agree with Dennis, giving away too many buttons/awards dilluts the finalists and wins. The whole excitement of receiving a finalist/win was that it was something special and rare.

Why would a photo that makes the first round of judging get a button? If we follow that logic then there should be Semi buttons, Semi-Semi buttons and why not a "I entered the contest and got this button" button.

But I've accepted that they are probably here to stay. So I'd like to be able to turn the EFPs off in my gallery. For some reason in Mozilla they show up to the side and not under the photo. The messy look of my gallery bugs me.

Ok, I'm going to get in hot water here, BUT they already give out medals that aren't deserved so I don't see how EFP dilutes anything. I just browsed a few past finalists and could see 4 photos on the first page that would not be accepted at any stock site. One for focus, one for blown highlights, and two for lighting.

You all need to look at the contest as a fun activity and not take it so seriously :o).

A few months ago I decided not to get in to these silly discussions anymore. I guess I've gotten bored trying to behave myself :o)! At any rate, I'm outta here...have fun! :D

You are right Sharon :-) I'm getting upset over nothing. I am certain I wouldn't have been upset if the EFP buttons had been different than the other ones.

I did take all the EFP out of my gallery because the buttons showed up to the side and that didn't look too good.

Not sure why Mozilla has them to the side but IE shows them under the photo. Mozilla must be reading the HTML code wrong.

And Bob you are right too, everyone should get a boost to know they are on the right track. I just think BP could have used a different graphic.

I certainly feel for the BP staff! We all know that nobody can please everybody all of the time... Anytime BP rolls out a new or changed feature, the members seem to split down the middle for "love it" or "hate it" :) Fortunately, the furor usually passes, over time.

I can appreciate the EFP providing a 'nudge' and positive reinforcement to a photographer who is new, or has never won a Finalist or other win. BP is a business to promote the learning of photography, afterall; newer photographers just starting out would, by extension, be the core demographic for identifying class customers, etc., so a little treat for folks now and then could be a good thing.

But I agree with you Susan and Dennis, that there doesn't need to be a "medal" for catching the BP staff's eyes with your photo. (Nor do I personally believe it is the contest judges, assigning these EFP's... I believe they only enter into the monthly judging process much, much later in the game.)

If the EFP more or less represents the "Runners Up" pool (ie, the first round of entry eliminations, where BP pares 26,000 entries down to about 14,000) as many of us who used to peek at the hidden Runner's Up pool believe it does, I just don't see a reason to medallion those "first-cut" photos. (And as Susan pointed out, there are then 2 more rounds of eliminations after Runner-Up, before you get to today's Silver Medal Finalists! Should different medallions be awarded when your image reaches those interim levels, but falls short of Finalist?)

I believe in the current state, the EFP medal does take away from the Finalist/Winners who enter the contest, and actually *win* a place according to the judges. I've always considered the contest (with the resulting wins) to be the one path to earning a medal on BP (along with POTD, of course.) Now, only the most inexperienced, truly bad snapshot-style photographer doesn't stand a reasonable chance of "seeing gold." (I'm sure I've probably offended someone with that statement; I truly don't mean to, however. I'm just not a fan of giving out trophies or ribbons, say, to kids sports teams, just for showing up and having a positive attitude despite losing the game.)

Now that there are suddenly some 70-plus new gold medals in my gallery, my single "honest gold medal" in 20 months of entries (a Second Place) seems lost in all the new bling, and my silver Finalists, which used to represent my images closest to a full-blown win, now appear to take second stage (visually) to all the new gold in the gallery.

I am not new to photography and I do appreciate the EFP recognition. The majority of the images that I submit to the contest never make it to the finalist stage; it is nice to see that the images that I thought were decent got a little recognition. I do agree that a smaller medal, banner etc would be in good taste. But for those of us who enter and rarely make it as a finalist; it is confirmation that our shooting is on the right tract.

It's WONDERFUL being a GOLD medal winner and CONGRATULATIONS, but what about the rest of us? BP just took a survey. Maybe noticing some "other" good photos is what members wanted. I was delighted to see that someone "noticed" a photo of mine here and there. No one else took the time or made the effort to respond. Being recognized is an incentive to do better. My photography is improving as I take more BP courses. I have the desire to improve just for my "own pleasure". I think it would be a good idea for "Editor's Choice" to be explained. Who are "they (editors)"?

I think the reason we all like BP.....is it's a very Encouraging Website.....a very Encouraging Community of Photographers.

A lot of people here notify others when they see there picture in EFP"S.... Now they obviously don't need too... but they get very excited & rightfully so.
Maybe, just make the awards slightly smaller and/or a different color... so they aren't competing with the Finalists & Winners... Either way, it's all good.

I personally appreciate BP for constantly trying to improve an already Wonderful Site. Great Job BetterPhoto!!!

I've been trying to figure out how this works.

I think that as the photos arrive at BP people are looking at them (the editors?). They either click "yes" or "no" on each one. The "yes" photos are the "Editor's Picks" and go on for consideration in the Contest. The "nos" are no longer considered.

When the Finalists are selected the "Editor's Pick" button changes to a "Finalist" button.

This explains why resubmitted photos that were not considered the first time can go on to win the contest. A different editor noticed the photo as it arrived the second (or third) time. A "no" from one editor became a "yes" from another.

Of course, I could be wrong!

In my very humble opinion (IMVHO), BP has provided what many people have been asking for.
Why are you fussing over this?...

I think this (EFP button) is one of the most wonderful things to many people, the submitters of 26,000 photos, who are working very hard every month to achieve the level to be recognized in the finalist and higher level.
This is what I call "the positive reinforcement".

Hooray for BP!

Hi everyone, I noticed the buttons today.I think is a good idea to show something on that line. but would would like to see a little bit of a change. I think they look a little to much ,maybe just a small button with the letters EP on it .Also maybe with a different color like red or maybe even a little star. It seems to get a little confusing with all the buttons under one photo.

Also I can see that BP missed many recent 'Editor Picks" . If BP never did anything along this line wouldnt matter to be ,but It is nice to see that they are thinking of their members , encouraging them to keep trying.

The color and the size of the button is only a small part of "positive reinforcement" and "joy of being recognized".

Expressing your view is a good thing, however, but telling the company how to run the business is for Jay Reno...

The past two days I've gotten comments from folks about my entries in "editor's picks". I didn't realize until today that there WAS a button! I don't spend much time on BP anymore due to being way too busy at work, and I don't enter many images in the contest now, either. I joined BP last year in the spring and fully expected some of my images to make "finalists". None have. None. Some I was sure would. I was at first discouraged. Then someone who did comment on a picture reminded me that if folks are willing to buy my images they are pretty good. That was extremely reassuring. I quit worrying about it. I do look through the finalists and winners each month and study them. I definitely believe that my photos have improved in the past year largely due to my perusal of others on BP. I know I've learned much by observation and example. Still, even though I don't understand their selection/elimination process, I'm grateful to find that they have been looking at some of them a bit more closely. I agreed entirely with those in my gallery that have been designated this way. However, I also believe that the way of indicating these ought to be less conspicuous. But, I'm thrilled they are doing it!

I didn't know these buttons/picks existed, and was really chuffed that someone at BP had taken the time to go through my entire gallery, and award them to me. So despite negative crits, I think it's great, and as someone mentioned (sorry, I haven't read this thread in great detail), its given me a boost. There are pix in my gallery, which I thought were pretty ok, and didn't make it into finalist, but have got a button, which has re-inforced that maybe they WERE ok, but someone was a bit better at the time - (could be Chris is right, they they're kind of short-list for finalists) that's fine with me, just nice to know that out of all the gazillions that come in daily, someone took the time to look at my gallery. So thanks BP. I don't mind the Gold Badge, but if it were to be changed, possibly the 'ribbon' thing that Chris designed would be quite nice - either way, doesn't bother me - just nice to know that the guys take the time!

I think BP is doing a great job. Just imagine how much time it must take to go through each and every gallery and choose photos at Editor's Picks. I would have expected they would do something go forward with newly submitted images, but they have also gone back to older images. The time it took is much appreciated. It was nice surprise!!

Thank you BP...

Thank you BP for saving me so much time looking thru EFP to find my photos. Now I can actually spend the time enjoying the other submissions.

I guess EPF get placed into a database and deciding to inform us through the inclusion of a badge in our gallery was why some are complaining that their gallery is now full of badges.

I do agree that the EFP badge is as conspicuous as the winners and that is not fair. A star with EPF on it is fine by me.

Finally, the most important is the pictures so stop arguing and go snap. Hope someone did actually write to BP about this. hehe..

Have fun.

You can rest assured that BP did NOT go back through everyone's galleries, to come up with this week's sudden appearance of EFP badges.
As mentioned earlier, they have an ongoing database of which photos were EFP, ever since the "Browse EFP" feature first appeared on the BP menu, months ago; simply assigning a badge to display on those photos was all that was needed. (And, as many suspect, they can go back further in time, by accessing their records of which photos made "Runner Up status" in past contests, before EFP even existed.)

Ok... My last post on the EFP debate threads! ;) Happy shooting!

Joy, I think this is the "Runner Up" list. All the "first picks" going back a couple of years must still be tagged in the BP system. All they had to do was add a badge to the tagged photos and suddenly we have "Editor's Picks" going back in time.

Of course, if you regularly delete photos from your gallery (like I do) you have probably deleted photos that would have been EPs.

Just my theory!

As always you can't seem to please everyone. This is something that betterphoto did not have to do and I am on the record as saying I love it, and thank them for their wonderful efforts. To all of those who don't agree I guess we are all entitled to our opinions but as I am entitled to mine I think all the complaints are petty, why not appreciate something nice that they have done for you instead of complaining about it.

Donna, overall I think that people agree it is a positive move. But as loyal, not to mention PAYING, members of BetterPhoto, we also like to provide input and hope that our opinions will be taken into consideration.
Seems they main "complaint" (rather, idea!) is just that the EFP's be made smaller so as not to compete with the wins. We all know how hard it is to get a Finalist, so this idea seems valid to me.
It would be interesting if BP posted a survey about them:
1. Love 'em?
2. Hate 'em?
3. Change the design?
Just to see how the majority feels. :)

  Hi Maria,

The "Editor's Picks" are simply recently uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found interesting, eye-catching or beautiful. In the past, if you wanted to find new photos for discussion, you might go to "New Arrivals". The problem with that, though, is that this group is global and unedited - everything being uploaded to BP. The "Editor's Picks" gives you a selection of interesting photos upon which you can comment. They are updated weekly.

Also, we are working on a different version of an emblem.

Thank you,

I've called you a fabulous photographer Sharon. Does that count :-)

I can fully understand why people like the EFPs and I can understand why people don't. There are legitimate points on both sides. At least I think so.

BP has mentioned they are thinking of redesigning the EFP buttons. And I think that is a nice compromise for everyone.

I don't think anyone on either side of the debate was being "petty".

I too have noticed Editors Pick buttons showing up at different times, sometimes quickly, sometimes up to a week after photo is posted.

But here is a new one for me.....this morning when I looked, two photos that had previously had EP buttons, now have no button at all.....what do you think? Did they change their mind or is it possible they have been moved on to the next round?

You know, it is nice to know that the Editors looked twice at a photo, or that one even ends up winning a finalist or better button. But what I really look forward to is the great supporting comments that I get from other photographers just like me who are bit by this bug and are addicted to taking photos and learning more and more from each other. Thank you to all of you for your support and encouragement and constructive critiques! Keep it up.

Well, I only joined BP in January of this year. I've learned so much since joining and I know will continue to learn as long as I am a member. I have to say, I really like the EFP buttons. Right now photography is a hobby, but hopefully down the line it will become a profession. Friends and family can look at pictures and tell you how great they think they are, but to have others that do not know you 'tag' a photo so to speak as one that they feel stands out is very encouraging for someone in my position. So, thank you BP for offering this section!

I for one, have no problem with the "look" of the badges (e-picks) although they could be smaller I suppose; and I also know (from hard experience) things don't look the same on all servers and computers! On my new laptop, if I use Internet Explorer, my gallery is a full fledged disaster! It is ok on Foxfire and, on my older laptop, fine with either one. Just one of many aggravations in a given day...! lol. When they re-did the site about 2 years ago, I had to give up using Yahoo on my desktop! The changes sent the site to hype-space. So I can empathize with anyone who's had their gallery ruined but a change of server ought to solve the problem as it did for me.

Either way, I love the concept of the badges. Not all photos can be finalists or winners: it is great to get some recognition for the shots that don't quite make the cut. I know I found a LOT of badges in my older photos when I checked and this was just tremendously encouraging! Some were old favorites. Up to now, I figured they were overlooked and so in many cases I did not pursue whatever method I was using at the time. It is nice to get a little nudge that tells you, "Hey, you're going in a good direction!"

Whether they're related to the contest, I believe the answer's coming very soon. We will know when the finalists are out! I do know, some of mine were semi-finalists (back when we could check that kind of thing); but whether all were semi-finalists, I do not recall. I do wonder whether we will see some finalists which did NOT receive a badge... maybe there are certain people choosing picks and others choosing for the contest? I do believe, the new features on the site have fired up a lot of peoples' interest! Mine included. I like the badges, LOVE the favorites, and I also like the messaging. I give a big Thumbs Up to the over-all improvement on the site!

It would be nice if the EFP were split up by date or something.
As other says, if you hit reload, you see a lot of pictures many times within short time.

Well you finally got what you wished..a less conspicuous Editor's Pick medal under the pictures. What an anti-climax. I can hardly see itm :(

I like the change...much easier now to see the true finalists, POTDs, and winners. Thanks, BP!

Did you notice that the finalists didn't get the badge this time?

Maria, I'm sure the finalist badges will appear tomorrow. Probably just a glitch.

Are the judges being more selective or is the quality of my photos getting worse? Are the judges on strike?

Nikki D. Storms   Editor's Picks represent uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found especially interesting, eye-catching, or beautiful. They are simply contest entries that have moved on from Round 1 of the contest judging.

Interesting, so you don't think all photos that make the first round automatically get an EFP? I assumed they did. Interesting concept.

ALL round one selections get an EFP. They are not selected by the judges though. The judges for the monthly contest don't get involved until later rounds; round 2 my guess.
