Editor's Picks

Have you noticed BP is putting medals under the editor's picks now? I just noticed. I think it's a great idea b/c it lets you know which of your images they like. It's great feedback. Thanks BP!

  That's a great idea!

I don't feel so bad about not being a finalist, yet. 24 of my last 40 entries have been picked, so I must be doing something right.

I think it's cool too. I haven't gotten a finalist in a couple of months so I enjoyed seeing a few more buttons :o)! Does anyone know how far back they go?

I guess I must be the only one who doesn't like them. The buttons are too big and are the same color as a first/second win.

They even stand out more than the finalist buttons, which I thought was supposed to mean something special.

Why not just have a small star or EFP under the photo?

Sorry, maybe I am just extra crabby today but I think it is bit much.

Ok before everyone starts yelling at me, let me get a drink first :-)

I do think they are kinda big and more noticeable than a finalist, but I am glad they are acknowledging photos that they find appealing. This helps us to improve. Sometimes it's hard to know what is good when you are the one that created it. Of course you're going to be biased. So it's good to know that professionals like it.

I agree Susan... I love the idea of us being able to see the CURRENT Editor's picks of ours... Keeps us from refreshing the EFP links all day looking for our images...lol

Come on.. I'm not the only one right??

Anyway, I like the concept but but think the badges are too bold.. Maybe a star under it would be good... Or change the color of the matting around the EFP.. The way it is now... When you get a finalist with one of these, you go from GOLD to SILVER.....

I appreciate BP thinking of ways to keep us in the loop... And it's a huge boost to see the recognition...

I am curious about how they choose which are badged... I have 1/2 my gallery in GOLD now... Many not entered into contest for over a year... And then a few I KNOW I saw in the EFP last month, had no badge...

I hope someone from BP can answer some questions for us...:)))

Thanks!!!!

First you walk. Then you run. Give BP some time to fine tune the EFP badges... :-)

Bob (overly cranky today!)

Love the idea, but not thrilled with the look. I use Firefox browser and my gallery looks all out of order now..They need to make them smaller, or just put EFP or something under it..

You are right Bob... I'm sure the kinks have to be worked out...:) I just was wondering about the selection... Cause I know I have seen many of the ones in my gallery in the EFP that do not have a badge... Just curious about the process..:)

LOL Bob you could never be as cranky as me ;-)

I do like the idea of people getting recognition for EFP but something much smaller than the current button. I like the idea of a little star or something under the photo.

The only thing I would have changed when I first saw them was placing the medal under the photo rather than beside it. I see they've fixed that. Bob gives good advice :o)! Oh, and those that wants stars, did you notice the medals do have stars?? LOL

  Hi everybody,
I think the button for EFP is great, and I'm thrilled that BP is doing this for us. I also think it's probably a lot of work on their part, so I don't want to sound like an ingrate, but ... (!) I agree with Susan and Kara. A little blue star would be great. I'd bet money that they do change it after awhile.

As for how far back the EFP buttons go, I got one on an entry from 3 years ago!

Love the badges, but don't like the "Gold" badge competing with my three Second place wins. They are now lost in a sea of EFP’s. BP needs to do something quick! I like the star idea. (Maybe just big enough to place “EFP” on it) The star can stay gold as long as it is small because it will be different then a finalist badge.

Just curious.. if one does not get a editors's pick on an image can you pretty much count that out as not getting a finalist too?..and has been or is the editors pick part of their elimation process for picking finalists?

From Jim Miotke, as posted in another Forum thread here recently:

"Hello friends,
The "Editor's Picks" are simply recently uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found interesting, eye-catching or beautiful.

In the past, if you wanted to find new photos for discussion, you might go to "New Arrivals". The problem with that, though, is that this group is global and unedited. It's everything being uploaded to BP. So you often see duplicate photos or an entire page of one subject, for example.

The "Editor's Picks" will give you a selection of interesting photos upon which you can comment.

We still have the "New Arrivals" and "Recent Contest Entries" categories, for those of you who want to see that global set of images. But for those of you who would like to just see the unique photos that catch our eye, the "Editor's Picks" will be just the ticket.

Enjoy!"

Thanks Bob, but Jim's post does not answer the question of if an image is not chosen for editor's pick then there is no hope for finalist etc. because they (bp staff) use that as the first round of picks in chosing or elminating finalists? Winning is not everything but I would not like to know until the end if they liked a photo or not. jmo:)

I'm glad they have done something to let us know if we have editor's picks. We don't all have the time to go through all the EPs. I had only seen a couple of mine in there when I looked at the EPs, but now I find that I have 27! It is encouraging to know that you are on the right track!

I like the idea of designating which photos got EP's...I just went to my little gallery and found four that I had never seen while browsing EP's.
It's a big "medal" and I can see how it would look too similar to a win-something that is a much bigger accomplishment and should be obviously different.

For anybody who may take not getting an editor's pick the wrong way, I'm sure that not having one is not saying the picture isn't any good. Just like having a new dress on does not mean it's ugly because nobody said nice dress to you on your way to work.
Bob relayed that it's recently uploaded photos that got noticed. So that tells you that, amongst many other reasons, if a photo isn't recent, or they weren't looking thru the recent uploads at the moment you put yours in the server, they just didn't see it.
So relax and keep in mind they can't look thru all the photos for the contest, maintain all the duties for running a website, and look thru all recent entries at the same time.

It's nice to have the EFP's recognized in our gallery. I hope this doesn't sound like I am ungrateful...but PLEASE betterphoto...change the emblems to be smaller and maybe even a different color. I don't normally chime in here with my opinion, but I agree with the others and feel strongly about this.

To add to what Gregory is saying, last month's Grand Prize winner was a resubmission--it didn't get anything the month before. So, yes, they do miss photos that are worthy of EFP/winning!

I'm now more or less convinced the EFP is in fact the formerly-hidden "Runner's Up" pool from the contest judging process. (ie, the first elimination round of entries, historically going from say, 26,000 total entries, down to a group of 14,000-16,000 for next-level advancement, as I used to observe last year.) I've got EFP medals on images now, that haven't been entered into a contest once in 2007---they were 2006 or even 2005 entries, long before EFP was available on the BP menu!

When we used to be able to view/hack the "secret" web addresses for Runner's Up, it was a new web address every month---like the Finalist/Winners for past months are, now---so BP likely has the Runner Up groupings still intact, from every monthly contest, to tell who made Runner Up, and thus display an EFP medal now.

Regardless, I'm of the opinion EFP doesn't need a medal (and certainly not a gold oval one that looks far too much like a Contest Medal.) Why a gold medal just to say "You made it through the first culling of 50% of the 26,000 images!" ?

Gregory---to play devil's advocate, how long do you predict it will be, before someone asks "Why didn't my photo make EFP?" ;)

Just change the color to Bronze.

Olympic Medals....GOLD.....SILVER......BRONZE.

For me, it's nice to know some pictures I thought went unnoticed, were actually being considered.

Don't know how many EFP's there are every month though?....

Ross - great idea on the bronze!
I was very suprised to see these medals appear on my gallery, especially those on my last page of older images when I never even got a sniff of a finalist at the time!! So I'm guessing there's a lot of EFPs handed out and they must be based on some round of the judging, probably early on. Only problem with all these different types of medals is it's really highlighting the sub-par images in my gallery - ha ha!

Glad to see they're acknowledged in some way.I personally think the EFP shots are simply photos that catch their "eye" when they're uploaded.Bronze is a good idea though instead of gold.

Regardless of whether I personally like the look of the badges or the existence of them... I would like to see them be accurate. Since the EFP's have been running, I've been keeping a list of my images that I saw in there... I have "plenty" of badges and I'm not complaining about not having enough but I know of at 8 of my photos from April and May that were popping up regularly in the EFP yet they didn't receive the badge...(and I haven't gone to the trouble to check the ones that aren't currently on display in my gallery so there may be more) That's just inconsistent and doens't make sense....

Marie, makes it sound even more like it's based on judging rounds. Unless they went through everyone's galleries and made picks then it must be based on judging rounds at least for the older entries.

Perhaps instead of the oval button/medal look (too similar to contest winning medals) a total departure... (Forgive the crude free-hand drawing in Paint---it is all I have at work, to play around in!)
