Photography Question

Best resolution for picture sizes? (8x10, etc...)

I was wondering what are the best resolutions to convert my images to, after shooting in RAW and coverting to JPEG? Also what DPI should I set the image to also? I am using Mpix.com to print so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi Scott,

I use MPIX and get great results by opening my RAW file in Adobe1998 colorspace at 16 bit with a resolution of at least 240. 300dpi is best, but the file does get big in a hurry. If you open the image at 300 dpi from RAW, save it as a native file (PSD for photoshop, etc) as you work on it, then save your final output to a JPEG once, and upload that. Never save a JPEG more than once, as it recompresses and loses quality with each save. Ideally it's best to save as TIFF for final output for a print shop, but an 8x10 at 300 dpi can approach 30mb in TIFF format, and I think MPIX has a limitation on upload size (check, maybe not).

dont worry about reso... the printer will up or down size it to fit their profile.. I just send the file at the size (8 x 10) I want @ 72 DPI and all is good.

Yeah, right now in my RAW software I am saving it as a JPEG at 300dpi. So what your saying Paul is that I should save the image as a Photoshop image, and then when I'm done photoshopping it then save as a JPEG? Also does a photoshop saved image lose quality?
