Re: Wide angle lenses for a Canon 5D

Hi Everyone,

I am taking a trip and contemplating puchasing one of the lenses listed below. I own a Canon 5D and want a wide angle lens. I already have the Canon 20-35mm but looking for a wider one. I hate to shell out the high dollars for the Canon if the other 2 lenses will work nicely. If I have to then I will. But do any of you have any experience with these lenses and whether they will work with my full frame Canon 5D or even if they are any good?

Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX Lens for Canon Digital SLR

Tamron Autofocus 17-35mm f/2.8-4 DI LD Aspherical (IF) Ultra Wide Angle

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens

I'd appreciate any feed back you could give.

Thanks,

Gianni T

Tokina 12-24 f/4 DX is designed for the smaller sensors of the DRebel and xxD Canons (as well as Nikon, Pentax, and Sony DSLRs). It will vignette badly on a 5D. I have the Canon 20-35 f/3.5-4.5 USM and like it a lot. Usual suspects for a wider but otherwise similar zoom include:
EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM II, EF 17-40 f/4L USM, Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 EX, Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4 EX HSM, and Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 Di LD. I haven't seen a bad review of any of these. Pick based on best fit for budget, USM/HSM, ultimate wide angle wanted, and desired amount of overlap with other lenses.

An alternative would be to continue to use the EF 20-35 and supplement it with the Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 EX HSM, which is designed for 35mm and "full frame" cameras like the 5D and has amazingly low barrel distortion for such a ultra wide angle zoom. Or go even wider with a diagonal fisheye (eg. EF 15 f/2.8 Fisheye or Sigma 15 f/2.8 EX Fisheye).

I love my Canon 17-40L but, bought the 16-35MM and returned it...for $800 I didn't think it was enough difference for my type of photography.

I wouldn't part with my 17-40L for anything. Sure the 16-35 gives you an extra stop of light, but from the reviews I have read definitely not worth the extra dollars. Out of all my lenses my 17-40L is my sharpest lens.

there you go Jon, even Jon Close loves the Canon 17-40L! I used it all the time on my Car/Model shoots cause I could get the entire vehicle in the frame in tight garages and at car shows. Any decent camera store will surely have one in stock so grab the camera and ask to shoot a couple frames with it.
