Photography Question

Sarah-fiona

How do I get RAW out of my camera?

So far I've been getting used to digital photography and shooting only JPEGS. But yesterday I had a go at RAW. I confess I'm a complete novice.

How do I get them out of the camera?

I use Zoombrowser and when I try to upload them only the JPEGS show up in the viewer. I have tried a couple of other upload software programmes that were unused on my pc and it is the same. I can view the RAW files in the camera viewfinder but when I try to upload them it is as if they don't exist at all.

Any (inexpensive!) ideas? I don't have Photoshop but have an old version of Elements which doesn't even say which version it is.

Thanks!
Sf

What camera are you using? Many come with software for handling the RAW file. Check the Adobe website. (LINK) Depending on which version of Elements you ahve, you may be able to download their Camera RAW utility.

D'oh! I see by your other thread thay you have Canon EOS 350D. Using Zoombrowser should also have tipped me off. The software packaged with your camera should have included Digital Photo Professional which is used for processing RAW files.

Sarah, to directly answer your question, "How do I get them out of the camera?", Remove your memory card from the camera and insert it into a card reader, perhaps built in to your computer, or a stand-alone card reader. This is always the best practice for transfering images from camera to computer.

Select "My Computer (PC) and open the card reader drive. Select all (Control A) and move the contents to a folder in "My Pictures." I suggest you create a folder named "New Images" or such and download to this folder.

Now follow Jon's instructions on opening the images in your RAW converter program.

Hi Jon, I checked the software bundled with the camera and there is Camera Suite 1.3 (which has Arcsoft stuff on) and the usual solutions disk etc. I don't have Digital Photo Professional. I did try the bundled software but to no avail.

Hi John, Success! Managed to transfer via My Computer use pc's built in card reader. Will have another go with the software tonight.

Many thanks to you both,
Sf
