Help with shooting Neon Light

I'm having trouble photographing this lamp. This is a bottle that sits on top of a lighted base. The light bulb is in the base and shines up through the bottle creating a neon effect. As you can see in the pictures, I am getting a bright light in the bottom of the bottle. When I try to use a flash, I am also getting the light, but the bottle looks like it's just filled with colored water.
I am using a Poloroid Fun Flash digital camera. It's one of the better ones, but still a piece of junk. I'm also using a tripod.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

The pictures submitted are 1 with flash, and 1 without flash.

Derek
