How to shoot the sun Can somebody tell me how I can shoot the sun any time of the day in its simple round shape? Even when I use the sunset mode of my camera, I seem to have a problem of getting the shape of the sun. If I need filters, what type of filters should I use?

Hi Alex, First be careful! Looking at the sun directly with the unaided eye will cause permanent eye damage. Go to a welding supply shop. Buy a #12 welding filter sometimes called shade 12. These are rectangular and fit as a replacement into the face masks used by welders. The replacement filter is inexpensive and the #12 is quite dark. You can’t see anything through it, because it is so dense. However you can see the sun and it will appear as a disk. You can hold this filter in front of the camera and photograph through the filter. Again be careful, Alan Marcus

In front of the lens, not between your eye and the viewfinder.

Alan, Thank you for the info about the welding filter. I didn't know it was dangerous to point the camera lens at the sun. I'm glad I didn't do that :) I will try the #12 filter. Gregory, Thank you for your helpful tip!!
