Need help buying my first lens! So, I have a Canon 'Rebel' 350d and the 18-55mm kit lens. I would like a lens that takes good portrait shots. I keep hearing about the 50mm 1.4 but I don't know how much different that would be from what I have. There are waaaay too many lenses to choose from. I don't even know where to start! Thanks!

The 50mm 1.4 will be incredibly different from what you have! I recently purchased the 50mm 1.8 and havn't used my kit lens since. I am amazed at the kind of shots I can get using natural light that I couldn't before. If you are on a tight budget, the 50mm 1.4 is pretty affordable and will help you so much more than the kit lens. My next goal is to save up enough to get the 20-70mm f2.8.
