Film lens on XTI

Can I use my 28-90mm 1:45-5.6 (kit lens for film rebel Ti) on the digital rebel? Hoping to just buy body and save for a better lens.

Shannon, just to elaborate - the lens will likely fit on the digital Rebel and work electronically with it, but due to the digital camera's smaller-than-film-sized sensor, there is what is called a 'crop factor". This factor for that digitla camera may be 1.6. This basically means that since the chip is only picking up the light from the central portion of the image projected internaly by the lens, it is as if you were using a longer lens on a film camera.

In other words, at 90MM on the digital camera the lens will have the same view as a (90x1.6=)144MM lens would look on the film camera. There is no light loss, so the f-stop remains the same - it's like getting more telephoto-ness for free!

Downside is that on the wide angle side, the 28MM setting on the lens will be more like a 49MM lens - not wide angle at all.

So I should go ahead and get the kit lens with the digital rebel?
Thanks so much for your help!

I guess that depends on the particular lens...which is it?

Shannon, are you looking for wide angle? If not, then I would use the kit lens from the Rebel on the digital rebel and buy the Canon 50 mm 1.8. It is 79.95 at B&H photo and I am very, very happy with it. I believe it converts to about 90 mm angle of view. It is an excellent portrait lens, and great outdoors in low light. But, you do have to zoom with your feet!

The 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the Digital Rebel gets lots of bad press because most people compare it to more expensive lenses. If it sold for $250, then I would be very disappointed with it. But when you can get it for $100, it's really not a bad deal.

It's actually pretty sharp, and I don't think you'll find another 18mm wide angle lens for that price. Is it as sharp as my Canon 50mm f/1.4? Of course not, but I don't expect it to be. I paid 3 times as much for that lens.

I say get the kit lens.
