Photography Question

Buying a Dslr 30D vs D80/200

I know this has been asked many times but I'm really having a hard time deciding. Yesterday I left the house knowing I was getting the D80 I came home wanting the 30D.
I'm going to be saving until the 13Th of June so I can get a decent lens as well.
It seems the photographers whose work I admire or who's books I'm reading mastly use Canon. I need spot metering and DOF preview. I hate that it boils down to Nikon vs Canon, but there it is. I have no lens so I'm begining fresh.
I plan to study photography and immerse myself completely and I don't want to have any limitations i.e. burst rate, buffer dof preview ect. The 30D is going to be replaced pretty soon however and the D200 is pretty expensive for me atm.
I've read some of Ken Rockwell but will look at the comparison referred to in an earlier thread asking this same question. I should be able to cobble together around 1600.00.
Any thoughts or ideas and/or new perspective very much apprecited.
I wonder what John Miotke shoots with? Based on the lenses he lists in his book it's canon so I wonder which model. Thanks for reading all of this. ~ Mike

Michael, if you've done your homework then you know the differences between Nikon & Canon based on observations and reviews. What you need to do now is try them both out. Take a CF card to a camera store and ask to try them both. Try each of them with top of the line lenses. Go home and take a looksee at the photos in an image editing program such as Photoshop at 100%. Check them for sharpness, clarity and noise then make your decision on what YOU observe. To some extent it will boil down to personal preference. Good luck!

  Both are great cameras.
I recommend you Canon 30D, better at high ISO which is enough to make it over D80, I think when I was in Europe and I used ISO 1600 and 3200 and it remains good enough then I will never look at Nikon in this case.

Thanks for your response, I had reached the same conclusion I just hop that they do great things with the 40D or whatever will be released this summer. I just wish I liked the XTI more, I think the D80 is a much better camera featurewise and the ergonomics I like much more. Nikon clearly bests Canon at that price point. Ultimately this decision os about more than just one body however and I think Canon is the system I'll be buying into. I'll either get a used 30/20D or even a used XT/XTI to hold me over until the new camera is released. I think Canon realizes that they are actually in a fight now with all of the great camera's being released by other vendors. Now we'll get to see if they can raise the bar. Have a great day , Mike

  and why used?
I know that Canon and Nikon prices are very similar to each other.
Canon XTi price is close to Nikon D80, and I see that canon is cheaper, look at D200 for example, more expensive than 30D of canon, D2X [D2Xs] more expensive than Canon 5D and/or 1D MarkII[N], very close to MKIII, the only camera than is the most expensive in Canon/Nikon line is 1Ds MarkII, so I don't know where and why people keep saying that Nikon is cheaper, and if you get used Canon you can get also Used Nikon, so price is not an issue only and only if you compare 2 cameras from canon and nikon for same level, not a sense to compare 5D or 30D with Nikon D70s for example, hope you got the point.
Again, I like the lenses collection or accessories of Canon over Nikon, keep that in mind and good luck with any you get.

I'm sorry I'm a little tired this morning and I'm afraid I've missed your point. Thanks for the good wishes however.
I have no idea what I'll end up with.
But I need to do something soon.

Hey Michael, Tarez is a Canon user/lover and therefore a bit biased. Anyways, I am as well, but its my understanding that when Nikons bodys are a bit less expensive the lenses are a bit more expensive (although fantastic quality wise). Try both and pick the one you feel comfortable with. If buying used lenses you'll see Canon may be easier to buy used.

So I'm settled on Canon and I have all the money together now. I'm just stuck deciding between the 30D and an XTI. The new xxd series is due to be announced anytime now. The 30D's have just come down in price again. If I buy an XTI I'll have a smaller back up camera also a lighter camera should the situation call for it. If I can just hold out spending all of my money for a little while I can then order the 40D as soon as it's ready(which by all accounts will be very soon, September at the latest.
Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Of course I am going to say put your money on the 30D because that is what I chose over the XTi. In all honesty, though, the XTi is a strong performer as well. The benefits/upgrades from the 30D are the self cleaning sensor and the 10mp file size. I weighed these options and held both cameras. I have relatively small hands and would have thought the smaller camera (xtI) would have felt better, but I just liked the feel of the 30D. If the burst rate is important to you I think the burst rate of the 30D is greater then the XTi from memory and the XTi does not have spot metering; two items you said were important. As for holding off for the 40D I see reports of the only additional features being the self cleaning sensor and increase from 8mp to 10mp. I don't know if I could justify the price difference for these features. I clean my sensor regularly so not an issue for me and I am already running out of room on my hard drive with 8mp. I would take the savings and invest in the best glass you can afford at that point. All opinion, hope it helps and good luck with your purchase!

Thank you Suzanne, sage advice indeed. Yeah the rumor mill is amok on the 40D. In all probability you are correct and it will be just another small incremental upgrade i.e. Digic III, self cleaning sesor, 10MP. I doubt we wil see much of true substance in which case I'd kick myself for not buying the 30D now. I'm going to spend whatever money I have left on Glass anyhow whether I get the 30D or the XTI it's not like in buying the XTI I'll have a little savings towards my next purchase. I posted a similar thread at Fredmiranda and almost universally was told to get the XTI and use the extra 350.00 I saved on Glass.
But I was just like you, when I handled both camera's the 30D felt more substantial and simply felt better in my hands. I'm not sure what I'll do. I have enough to buy a body and one lens today.
I get paid on Friday so I may wait until then, but I've been too long without a camera...very soon

  Micheal,
I use the Nikon D200/D70 and The Fuji S2( LOVE it's color processor)
I truly do enjoy the D200 and recommend it so many here.
There will be NO clear or right answer here.
You alone will have to live with your choice.
Here is a D200 kit with 2 Nikon Lens 1 DX and one 300mm @ $1495.
I have used this Dealer MANY times and always happy:

I hope this helps,
Debby
