getting a new camera

I have been doign my own photography in a small town for about a year now and have not been doing too bad with as little time I have given to really getting out there. Anyways I am wokring with a Canon Rebel and have been keeping an eye out for another camera as I would like to build my setup a bit at a time $ and all. So I found one on craigslist and it is simi local about 2 hr drive. it is a steal and I am well read on the postes that are on here about how 'this was a great deal and then it turned out to be a sham' my question I guess is how can I go about getting the camera to have it checked out. Of course I am going to as to 'use' it to make sure it works on site but anyother ideas. Not that I guess that it matters but it is a canon d1 for $800. thanks in advance.

Of course it matters. The entire idea of whether it is a good deal or not depends on what camera you are getting. You need to know exactly what you are getting. Is it a Canon 1D, or a 1Ds, or a 1D Mark II, or a 1Ds Mark II?

Assuming it is a 1D, let's look at what you are getting. A detailed review can be found HERE. At one time, this was Canon's Top-of-the-line Professional Digital Camera and sold for several thousand dollars. Unfortunately, that time was nearly 6 years ago, which is a lifetime in digital camera years (a digital camera year is even longer than a dog year). Keep in mind that the review at the above link was written when this camera was new, and it was compared to what was available at the time.

It still has many professional features, like a rugged magnesium body with weather seals, a high 8 frames-per-second burst rate, and a 45-point Auto-Focus sensor. Unfortunately, it is built around an outdated 4-megapixel CCD sensor with less resolution than the Rebel you are using now. Canon doesn't use CCD sensors in any of their digital SLR cameras any more, they only use CMOS sensors. They only use CCD sensors in compact digital cameras.

If you have any Canon EF-S mount lenses with your Rebel, they won't work with the 1D. If you have an external Canon flash, it should work with it. If you don't have an external flash, you'll need one, because the 1D doesn't have a built-in flash like the Rebel does.

If you have specific needs for the rugged build, or the 8 fps frame rate, then it might be worth considering. If not, then you could save some money and get the Canon Digital Rebel XTi (400D), with a 10 Megapixel sensor.

  Chris,
Thank you for the post I think I am just going to save my pennies and try to go for a new mark II. I am looking for something that will work with any lense that I put with my rebel and then use it as a back up so thanks for that beam of light too. Thanks again

Just a little more clarification on lenses. Canon EF mount lenses will work on any Canon digital or film SLR.

Canon EF-S mount lenses will work on the Digital Rebel, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, 20D and 30D. They will NOT work with any film SLR, the Canon 5D, or any of the 1D series of cameras.

The rule about EF-S lenses also applies to 3rd-party lenses that are designed for "digital only". This includes Sigma DC series lenses, Tamron DI-II series lenses, and Tokina DX series lenses.

I'm not saying you should never get a 5D or a 1D series camera because they won't accept "digital-only" lenses, I just wanted you to be aware of it before you make a purchase decision.

Buy Canon 30D if you want to use your EF-s lenses.
Buy EOS 5D or any 1-series new [II or III] and sell your EF-s glasses and never look back and I am sure no regret there at all.
