Photography Question

Jim A. Carlson

Car photo's?

If I took pictures say at auto shows and then later sold them would I need permission from the car company? or owner of the car? Or someone’s house, barn Ect? Do you need releases for that?

I’m new … be gentle if this is a dumb question

Thanks, jim

From the owner of the car for sure..and some of them can be quite prickly about it...As for the rest of your question, I'm sure Mark will get around to answering it. See my site and you can see how to get around showing the houses and background stuff.

What market are you aiming at to buy pictures of cars at a car show? The person who would be most likely to buy one would be the owner of the car. You don't need the owner to sign a release if you're selling the image to him, of course. If you really think someone else would buy the image, then offer the owner a discount on prints in exchange for a release.

If these are restored classic cars or customized cars, then you shouldn't have to worry about a release from Ford, Chevrolet, etc.

Just my opinion, I'm not a lawyer.

If you take pictures of a private residence (or barn), I believe you do need a release from the property owner, even if you didn't trespass on his property to take the images.

Here is a great article from last March's Outdoor Photographer which Bob Krist interviews photo attorney Carolyn E. Wright about releases including property. I think you will find some very clear answers here.

Thanks for the great answers. I had no idea you needed so much permission I figured if you where out taking pics there yours as long as it wasn’t someone’s face but then again.. Hollywood people do it all the time.

Chris I see photos for sale all the time at auto shows.. big prints that have been doctored or parts of cars say like a front end or stuff like that..
