Photography Question

Laura Brown

SB-28 flash compatibility?

Is the SB-28 flash compatible with the EOS D5? I used it with my Nikon F100. Or would I need to buy a new flash specific to a digital camera.

Thanks!
Laura

A Nikon flash is not going to be compatible with the Canon 5D. To get full compatibility, you should buy a Canon E-TTL flash (it will have EX after the model number).

The SB-28 has a non-TTL auto mode (A) that will work with the Canon EOS 5D, so long as you match ISO and lens aperture settings by using the 5D's Av and M exposure modes only.

Otherwise it is not compatible. Other than the large central firing contact, the arrangement and communication through the hotshoe/foot contacts are different. You won't have TTL flash metering in any mode, the AF assist light will probably not work, nor will the auto zoom, FP high speed sync, or red-eye reduction.
