Taking pictures at a theater without a flash

HELP! I just received a call regarding taking pictures during a theater production. They do not want me to use a flash! I think I can play around with it some when I get there, but I don't want to ruin them! What do I do?!>!

First, jennifer - don't panic. There's plenty of time for that later...

Next, the lack of flash migh tnot be a terrible thing - assuming they will have stage lighting that's bright enough to grab images. You will want to set your ISO to 800 or perhaps higher and use as fast a lens as you can - an f1.8 or 1.4 50MM even - to allow you the highest shutter speed possible.

In your time beforehand, you can experiment to see what ISO setting you need to still have a high enough shutter speed to avoid motion blur. In fact, if you could go to a dress rehearsal, all the better - you'll not only be able to check out the lighting but also have a sense of who's positioned where during the show.

If you can use a tripod, great - at least it will avoid blur caused by YOUR motion. But you will still want to have a shutter speed fast enough to prevent blur from the actors' movements.

Finally, you wil be using the ambient stage light, which means you need to color correct for that. If you have an Expodisc, bring it along, else a gray card to shott under those lighting conditions so youcan corect color balance in post.

Hope that helped. NOW you can panic.
