Photography Question

R.M. Fusco

I need a quality pro printer

I want to start a home business. I will offer digital printing, restoration, reprints and enlargements. My question is what will be the highest quality Epson or HP photo printer available? I will need to be able to print high quality prints that look as close to traditional film prints as possible. I use an HP DesignJet at work and I'm not that impressed. When I print on photo paper, I can see very, very slight banding and very, very slight noise. When the same image was printed professionally, it looked just like a print from traditional film. We use calibration tools at work on a regular basis. So what will be a good pro printer?

Thank you,

The first question you need to answer is how large do you want to print? This will make a big difference in the price of a printer.

I'm thinking up to 24" wide will suffice for now. So I want a printer that I can do roll printing with.

I think the models you should look at are:

Epson Stylus Pro 7800 - $3000

HP DesignJet Z3100 24" - $4100

Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100 - $3295

I don't know which DesignJet you use at work, but not all of them are optimized for photo printing.

Do some research on these printers. Read some reviews on them.
Save up.

Thanks Chris. I'll take a look at these models. I'm leaning a bit farther to an Epson, so I'll read up on that one first.

Thanks again,
Ro

After using HP printers for years, then switching to an Epson photo printer, I don't think I'll buy any printer but Epson in the future.
