Lighting for Maternity Portraits

A friend has asked me to shoot her *belly*. I have a backdrop, two light set-up and strobes but I never do this kind of thing... just looking for some lighting set-up ideas.

Thanks!

  Hi Richele,
I have a couple of lighting articles here at BetterPhoto, including this one about lighting with one light source. It might help you. http://www.betterphoto.com/article.php?id=129
I have another one about backgrounds that might be useful: http://www.betterphoto.com/article.php?id=176
There are a few more. I also have some articles on the magazine page of my website: www.siskinphoto.com. I know these aren’t really answers, but the information may help.
Thanks, John Siskin

  John,
Every little tidbit helps, thank you so much! I especially appreciate you just taking the time to respond- it is nice to hear from one of the instructors here at Better Photo whose work I admire and respect. Just one of the reasons this is my favorite photography resource!

Thanks again,
Richelle

  Hi Richelle,
I’m glad you like things here at BetterPhoto. There are a few good people who answer lighting questions here at the Forum. If I try to name them I will forget somebody and offend, but I like reading what many of them write. I have not done maternity shots, but I might suggest that special care be given to the comfort of the subject.
Thanks, John Siskin

Richelle,
There is no spacific lighting for maternity, that would be yours and your subjects preferance.
If you'd like to bring out the dramatic then you can use as little as one light, and a black background.
Pose your subject and move your light until you get the desired shadows where you'd like .
you should do a aray of poses, standing, lying, full body and 3/4s.
props to have on hand might be: pillows, extra matierials to accent background and foreground and even your subject. Bench or chair for those sitting poses. Satin robe or night shirt.
Also , many like having a flower or booties that match the sex of the expected child.
I always suggest that you look at galleries for ideas on poses and lighting.
There is no compliment so great as when another photographer steals your poses.
I do hope this helps,
Debby
