AV Mode Questions

I was given a used 20D with no instruction booklet, but I'm not a technical reader anyway so it probably would not do me any good.
Anyway, Can someone describe to me (in layman terms) what AV mode is and how to set my shutter speed for fast action?
Thank you!
M

Av (Aperture Value, ie. aperture priority) is one of the auto-exposure modes. You manually select the desired lens aperture and the camera automatically sets a shutter speed. To get the fastest shutter speeds that still allow enough light for proper exposure, set the lens aperture wide open (smallest f-number).

Tv (Time Value, ie. shutter-priority) mode is similar, but the user sets a desired shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the lens aperture.

  P.S.
A .pdf file of the instruction manual can be downloaded free from Canon USA. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct
