Photography Question

Victor E. Harris

How to Charge my client

Hi I am a recent graduate with a minor in photography. Recently I did a shoot for a principal and some kids for a hip-hop group. My question is in regards to some request that the client posed to me. She requested that I give her the negatives in order for her to mass produce the images for the kids seeing that they have different things they want to do with them (about 11 kids mixing with modeling album covers etc.) I found this to be a bit odd because i've never heard of a photographer offering their negatives to a client. Is this practical to do so?. Also at the outset I charged $300.00 for the shoot (and processing), and plan on charging for individual prints at production as a general question to the masses do you think this is the right way to go about charging them?

thanks

  My 2ยข:
Stick to your guns and your original contract ($300 for sitting and processing + prints). If they want the negs, sell them, don't give them away.

Hey Vic: If I were you, I'd go back to that school you graduated from and tell the dean that their program did almost nothing to prepare you for survival in the career they trained you in and ask them for a refund of all the fees you paid for your minor.

I've made nearly an identical point here over and over again. Schools that offer photography programs aren't even trade schools if they don't teach the business aspects of the programs they run.

NOW what you need to do is go join some professional associations, like ASMP, PPofA, or APA and start attending meetings to get a handle on pricing, contracts and other aspects of the business that will help you survive if you decide to stay in it.
Take it light.

Thanks Mark and Jon for your input. Mark what is the process to go through for me to join one of these organizations. I would like to do so soon also I read in previous threads about copyrighting and the process to go through to have your images copyrighted. Quick question does the $45.00 dollar fee cover a series submittal or is it $45.00 per print when you send the images to the copyrighting office in d.c.

Check out their qualifications for membership on the net. Then find the local chapters, when their meetings are, fill out an application and pay the dues. Also, determine which one may meet your needs over another one. Say Wedding Photographers over Media Photographers, or PPofA instead of National Press Photographers Assoc.

Look at the instruction sheet for form VA, It tells you how many images per submission and how to do it. 40 shots I believe is tops per submission. Kinda matches a 36 exposure roll.

Oh, and you're welcome Vic.
Mark
