Traditional filter vs Cokin system

Hi!
I am about to buy a set of filters for B&W photography. I have considered 'traditional' filters (I mean those which you screw on to your lens) and the Cokin system. I think the basic advantages of Cokin is that it more versatile (you can easily combine more filters, etc.) and cheaper (Yes, I am on low budget.) However, I suppose it doesn't have any antireflective coating (They are made of optical plastic, ain't they?). Could somebody tell me in what degree this is a problem? Could you give me a little comparison Cokin vs Traditional filter.
Thank you very much.

To be honest the Cokin system (holders and drop in filters etc.) is very good and an exellent value. Their filters on the other hand aren't really that good. The good new is that several other good quality filter manufacturers make filters to fit the cokin holder.

Thank you, Jeff. Another question: Could you tell me some good brand filter that would fit the Cokin holder? And what about the reflections? I have heard this kind of filters (optical plastic/resin) flares too much. Thanks.

Hi Tech and Singh Ray are a couple of brands that come to mind. As far as lens flares go, any filter is going to be prone to flares. Coated filters are less so but still vulnerable. Cokin makes hoods that attach to the holders that will help. Other than that you just have to be careful when shooting in the sun.

Is there a website where I can order Singh Ray filters. The dealers around here do not carry these and will not order them. I need a graduated ND filter more than anything.

You can order them directly from Singh Ray at www.singhray.com (I think or do a search) or from B&H at www.bhphotovideo.com (again, off the top of my head). I think they are a couple of bucks cheaper going through B&H (go figure).

Thanks Jeff, I couldn't find one on B&H a few days ago but I will check out the Singh Ray site. Do you kow of any other distributers of this filter besides Cokin'?

FWIW I just checked B&H and they had stock. Try this URL and click on Grad ND filters http://www01.bhphotovideo.com/default.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=CatalogActivator__Acatalog_html___CatID=4032___SID=EC123777820

I was told the Cokins can distort the image when you use a telephoto. Is that true? Would the Singh Ray or High Tech do a better job? Thanks.
