Shadows in my photos Why do I get shadows, when shooting indoors with a flash?

This is a little bit like asking "why is the ocean so salty?" The answer to your question depends alot on what kinds of shadows and where they're appearing, what kind of flash or lighting you're using, the format, whether you're using diffused or direct lighting, how close you are or how far you are from the subject, what kind of interior ambient light you've got, what the background looks like, what color the subject's clothing is, oh and what day of the week and the cycle of the moon you're shooting on. Get the picture? Shall I go on?

Since the flash is a few inches away from the lens, the light from the flash hits your subjects at an angle relative to the eye of the camera, so the shadow which the flash makes behind the subject is seen by the slightly differently placed lens. I hope this makes sense. To fix the problem, use a diffuser, or direct the flash at the ceiling using a mirror. Another option would be to use a tripod and slower shutter.
