Photography Question

Studio Lighting

I just purchased an SB800 flash to go with my Nikon D80. I have been going thru the NYIP courses and things are going well...but my weakness is flash. I really like the umbrellas because of the soft light and no shadows.

I currently have an old Vivitar flash with a peanut slave pointed in a small umbrella. Since I don't have a cord for the SB800 flash I have to trigger my slave unit someway and the only way I know is to point the flash upward or away from the subject such that it doesn't overexpose the picture, but still sets off the slave.

I have tried using my flash bouncing off the ceiling in conjunction with the umbrella, but get shadows. So I am thinking that the options are 1) buy the cord for the SB800 to take it off the camera and hook it up to the umbrella, or 2) don't use umbrellas at all and set the SB800 to manual or NonTTL with fill lights on either side of the subjects...

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Mindy

OR you could use the D80's pop-up flash as trigger: just arrange a tiny reflector on it (thin cardboard with alu foil), secure with a rubber band or sticky tape, and bend so that the pop-up flash does NOT illuminate the subject, but IS 'visible' to the peanut slave on your Vivitar.

And with that setup you can also use your new SB800 as asecond off-camera flash.

BTW, "an old Vivitar flash with a peanut slave pointed in a small umbrella" sounds like that gear might be underpowered for portait/studio lighting.

Sorry Debby, it is...I thought it should be a separate topic since it was regarding studio lighting setup as a whole.

My apologies for the confusion.

  OK, Mindy,
if you feel your triggers may not be working properly, then try sync cords, as I said you may need the AS-15 for you camra if thier is no sync port.
I think is may be easier if you post the problem shots.
We can help you a bit to determin what maybe happening.
you have two lights now, usually one is main ( place at 3:00)and one is fill (place at 7:00)
with out a backlight, your shot may look flat.
as you get comfortable with your triggering, you may be able to use the SB-800 as you backlight.
I hope this helps a bit,
Debby

  Debby,

Actually I have the sb800 on the camera pointing straight up to eliminate as much light on the subject as possible (basically to just trigger the slave). Then I have the Vivitar flash with peanut slave in small umbrella set with the highest intensity flash at about 4:00 or so to the right. So I am really only working with a one light setup.

I don't know if the trigger is working effectively or not, so I am not sure if the AS-15 will help, based on the other post..I may just need to set the SB800 to iTTL or Manual.

I thought about just buying a cord to get the SB800 off the camera and hook it up to the umbrella and then using the Vivitar with another umbrella as the fill. I know I am playing with a hodge podge of equipment, but would like to try to get the setup to work effectively right now.

I'll have to post the pics later from my home pc.

Thanks for the advice.
