How to shoot action shots

Hi....
I am looking for some help in shooting action shots, sports(softball) in particular. I will be using a 70-300 lens and/or a basic 35-70. Just looking for some help on ISO settings and F-stop, etc... thanks a bunch!!

  welcome rebecca,
for the g-kids I use 400 iso,and just use sports mode.sets the fastest shutter speed,1/500th to 1/1000th.
i'm guessing at 300mm your fastet aperture would be f5.6,use it if you don't want blurry pics, but f2.8 would be nice.well even f4 would be nice.
try to keep the sun at your back and use the fence to steady your camera, sam

Hi Rebecca,

type "sports" in the search box, hit enter, and read up on the subject. Then go out and DO it. Trial & error is the best teacher, and digital don't cost you none as long as you don't print.

Have fun!

Screw sports mode, use manual and use the fastest shutter speed you can get away with. Unless they are playing night games, you should have plenty of light to shoot at least 1/250 at ISO 100. If it's an overcast day, you may have to jack up the ISO. Use the fastest shutter speed that you can get away with.

i could'nt find a camera listed in your gallery, slr, dslr.no hint you'd ever shot sports or that you were familar with anticipating where the action would be or if your camera had some sort of predictive focus.
your iso setting did hint toward digital.
so you have your shutter speed set and at that moment a cloud passes in front of the sun, oops.missed that one.however if your very familar with manual, your success rate may vary.
play ball,sam
