Photography Question

the new Olympus E-510

I was woundering if thoes of you that have used Olympus SLRs would use the new E-510.. I am mostlikly going to buy one.. but I will let you. the long time shooters in here, help me deside. I know how nice the Point and Shoots that Olympus makes are, I have the c-5050-z, and love it. If I get this E-510, it will be my very first DSLR.. I know it is a lot more then the Canon XTi, but the live view and the stableization are what is selling me on it.. The IS lenses that Canon requiers are way too much for me to get.. each time I would want a new lense. So, Im asking you all.. Do you think the E-510 is a great first DSLR?

Thank you,
Robert Gaughan

Hi Robert,

If you're serious about SLR photography (and have a strong back) then, in the next 5 years, you will be spending far more on lenses than you did on the camera body.
So it makes more sense to look at the lens range that Olympus offers. Does it fill your future needs? Because if it doesn't, you'll have to start all over again in a few years with a Canon or a Nikon system. Which means that most of the dough you spent on the Oly set would be wasted....

Good luck.

  Hello W.S.

Thank you for the information. I will look into the line of lenses they offer.. I plan on using this camera for a small business.. portraites..on-location work and " everyday shooting " I seen the mid-range lense prices and the MM's offered.. They seem to be just fine for what I want to accomplish. I know I might have to dip into the high end lenses if I want a 2.8 or lower F, but that will be ok. Taanks aggain for the input W.S.

Robert

  Robert,
I can tell you that Olan Mills Studios have used the Olympus DSLRs for the last couple years.
They in fact use the E-1 and E-20's
which are 5.1 mp.
They do live feed on to a monitor.
and use remotes triggers.
They offer portraits in 16x20/20x24 and 30x40.
you can go by any studio to check this out.
These cameras are used all day every day and alot of times by people who don't know and don't care how they treat them, and they don't break down very often.
I hope this info helps,
Debby Tabb

And if you're the aquatic type, Olympus has a whole range of underwater cases and accessories for gorgeous reef photography.

I am also considering this camera very strongly. So far I have been impressed with what I have been reading. I am going to get the body only and pick my lenses. Sigma also makes lenses with an Olympus mount. If you get it let me know if you like it.

  Robert,
I just purchased the E-510 a few days ago; my first DSLR camera. I got 2 kit lenses with it. I need to know what settings I should start with. I am familiar with Olympus icons because I have the C-765 ultra zoom camera. I am trying to use the 40-150mm lens first to get shots of birds. Do you have any tips for beginners? Thanks.

Thanks for this thread... I currently shoot with an Olympus Camedia C-765 P&S and love it... It's been a wonderful camera, but I am wanting to get into stock photography and it just won't cut it with only 4 mega pixels.. I am going to have to upgrade to a DSLR to compete in stock... I was not aware of this particular model and have to say, I love the idea of sticking with Olympus... I had a 35 mm film Olympus a few years back and a few P&S's since then, but LOVE,LOVE the one I have... Olympus has been fantastic for me and even though the majority of BP members own Nikon or Canon DSLR's.... I keep leaning toward old reliable for me... After looking at the specs. and reviews on this camera, I am impressed yet again by this camera maker... I hope to be able to take the financial plunge very soon, and this is certainly a contender.. Thanks for letting me know about it!!!

what can I say but WOW.. you make that Oly P&S shoot as well as any DSLR I have seem.. fantastic!

I have the E-510 now for a while.. fantastic camera. Ihave a few images from it on my gallery.. please have a look. I just bought the 14-54mm F2.8-F3.5 lens. That too is fantastic! The Niagra falls images were taken with that lens. I hope you get to enjoy the Oly E-510 soon.. At the prices they are now, you cant go wrong. And also, in IMHP you will not need to get the E-520 when it comes out soon being you can maek a P&S do what you have done.. the E-510 will give you super fine images..

Happy shooting Kara!!

Robert

Well Robert, that's very flattering..:) I do love photography and due to finances, I have had no choice but to push my little P&S as far as it can go.. We make a pretty good team.. And if the contest was all I shot for, I wouldn't even mess with upgrading... So far so good... But stock is a whole other game, and I do feel my style will fit well there... So I have to make the jump...:) And Olympus has been a strong arm for me and my photography.. I'd hate to bail on her now..:)

Thanks again for tipping me off to it.. It may very well be my next camera...:) And hey, I had a look at your shots... Great job!! The race one really got my attention.. Bold colors and detail!!

Best of luck to you!! And thanks again!!!

  Fantastic Warren!

Im sure you will like it as much as I do my E-510. I recommend the 14-54MM F2.8 lens along with the " kit " lenses. What lenses did you order with your E-520?

At this time, I am looking for a pro-sumer camer such as the Lumix FZ-50, Canon S5, or the Olympus SP-570.
The SP-570 has the biggest zoom, but still uses xD. I wont use anything other than CF or SD.
The Oly E-510 has a nice kit combo, but consider the future. With the above you do get smaller sensors, but huge zooms for FAR less!

You cannot compare a digicam ( P&S ) with an DSLR. The image quality is compromised on a 120mm ( 35mm factor ) digicam zoom due to the small sensor. Small space, way too many pixels.. results in more noise.. as compaired to a 120mm lens attached to a DSLR

If you want great quality images at long zooms.. a DSLR is the way to go.. in my opinion. You pay more for the lens and camera, but you get way better quality images even at night and low light settings..

Having a digicam to go along with a dSLR is nice however. I have the Olympus C-5050-Z to go with mine.

Happy shooting

Robert

I have the Oly E-Volt 500 and love it. All the reviews say the kit lens for the Oly cameras are far above the kit lens for other cameras. While some of the Oly lens are expensive, you can buy Sigma lens, and Panasonic has some lens for the four-thirds systems. However, I haven't been able to buy a new lens yet and still shoot with kit lenses and you can see all the images I have shot with them in my gallery. I would have liked to have waited for the 510, but then I would have missed out on a lot of photo-taking while I waited. Maybe one day I can upgrade and give the 500 to Justin.

  Hello Carol,

From the looks of your great images you made with the E-500, the E-510 or the new E-520 will be like putty in your hands!

I also wanted to ask you a question. I see from your images of the studio settings that you have a nice one. The question is, do you just a room in your house as a studio.. or did you transform a garage into it?

I asking because I turned one of my rooms into a studio. It's 11' by 12.5' and it seems to be good for now. I was thinking of some day transforming the garage into a large studio. I have one studio shot on my galley here if you care to look.

Happy Shooting!

Robert

Hello Robert, thank you for your encouraging comments on my photos! I appreciate you taking the time to look! I am sure you will love the Oly. As far as the studio, I am not quite sure which photos you are talking about. If you mean the ones with the mice with white backgrounds or the dog with the blk BG, those were all made in a homemade lightbox which is made from a cardboard box! Any others are taken wherever I happen to be. The most recent maternity shoot was at the lady's home. I had her stand against a white curtain over a sliding door. I recently bought the FL-50 flash which I use with a homemade diffuser made from a piece of 10 cent craft foam which I bounce off the ceiling or in some cases, off the wall. Also I use a bit of PS here and there (which I am still learning), and I always shoot RAW so I can make adjustments. I can give you the web sites for both the bounce card and the lightbox if you are ever interested. One day I hope to make a stand and purchase some material or something for BGs. I can't have a studio where I live because we rent in a residential neighborhood. I definitely wish I had one, or even just had a few lights to set up in other's homes. However, I have not really been shooting for pay yet...I am just trying to get a portfolio together. I don't want to do it as a full-time job, but just for fun and supplemental income. I really want to follow someone around and practice shooting weddings because I really would like to do those. Good luck with your studio and your new camera! :)

  You are most welcome!

Those were the shots I was referring to, yes. You done a fine job making great images form everyday items and make it work! What did you think of the Maternity shot of mine? She is a friend of ours for a long time. I have the FL-36 flash and I have to sit down and read up on using it better then I have been. I shoot RAW+Jpeg all the time. My studio is not a full time job either. Extra income and the joy of taking photographs. Some day perhaps you will have a small studio and make some serious extra income on what you love doing too! I was supposed to shot a Wedding last month but the lady ended up not getting married.. cold feet I guess.

Thak you for the luck..with the mony tighness the way it is, I need it!..

Take care!
