Digital SLR flash photography settings

When taking low light photos my flash doesn't seem to reach out far enough to expose the entire subject area. It has to be in the f-stop area of my camera settings. How do I set up my camera to take in a fuller flash area? My camera is a Canon 20D.

The pop-up flash has an effective range of 10/11 feet. A mounted flashgun, if it is a big one, may have a working range upto 15/20 feet. Tops. So if the subject is further away from the camera/flash than that you may as well save yourself the trouble.

Good luck.
