I know I shouldn't but here goes: This has been answered about a hundred times or more here and in different ways. You can search this site for info by placing your query at the top of the new questions page. You are a photographer as soon as you take a picture. You are professional as soon as you sell a picture. You don't need a license (generally, maybe standard business stuff), except if you shoot pictures of private property or people, you may need to get release forms. You are a good photographer as soon as you like your work. You are a great photographer as soon as others like your work. You become a good/great photographer faster by reading up on photographic technique, such as composition, lighting, equipment, etc. Try using manual settings on a camera to really step into the world of cameras.

Ariel, I think what she's asking is how to become a professional photographer and earn a living at it. Your definitions are somewhat overly optimistic and your definition of professional falls quite short of the mark. Sorry kiddo. Your last point, I think, was quite helpful though. M.

Mark, All I will say to that is the proof is in a persons work and success. some of us are truley talented in one art form or another, some need schooling to succeed in thier choosen art. That does not make one way better then someone elses. But facts are facts, School is not mandatory in this or many art forms. Debby Tabb

Well Deb, I think that's true. Still, there are a lot of unemployed talented photgraphers around. So, I also think that if Elizabeth or anyone else for that matter has an opportunity to go to college, they should take it not just to study photography but collateral subjects as well that would help them succeed in this profession AND have a fallback education in case they need it at one point or another in their career, especially during the lean times an as you and I both know, there can be plenty of those depending on what area you're working in. Take it light. ;>) Have a gr8 week. M.
