Photography Question

camera equipment

I have a canon xti and am planning a trip to Japan for 3 weeks. I would like to know what lense or lenses would be good to bring with me. I do not want to bring a lot of equipment with me as I will be traveling alone and do not want to have a lot of luggage, Thanks in advance for any information.

I just upgraded to the following 2 lenses for my Canon 30D and love them. Out of my collection of lenses if I could take only 2 these would be it.

Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L IS....It is extremely light weight for a L series lens and the sharpness of pictures is near perfect. Low light capable because of the IS.

Canon 17-40mm F/4.0L...Great for wide angle shots even with the crop factor. Some may want a wider zoom, but not my preference.

This is personal preference, though. It really depends on the type of pictures you enjoy and will be taking.

What lens(es) do you have now and how much you want to spend?

When I was in Japan, I found that the wide angle to medium tele were enough for most scenes. At that time I only brought a FD 50mm/f1.4 and FD 28mm/f2.8. If you have the kit lens, EF-S 18-55mm, it should be enough for most cases (if you like the image quality).

The EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L is a very good lens but I think it is a little short. If I have to choose I will use only one lens, the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS. I prefer the IS feature because I heard that many temples and shrines do not allow the use of tripod anymore.

Tamron and other third party manufactures offer quality lenses in similar range but without the IS. Whatever you choose, good luck and have a wonderful time in Japan. Hope this helps.

The lenses that I have is the canon 18-55 that came with the camera, a canon 70 - 200f 2.8 L IS, a canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS, a tamron AF Aspherical XR 28-300mm marcro 3.5-6.3 , a canon extender ER 1.4 X II and a tamron SP AO Tele-converter 300 F-CA 2X. I do not want to bring the bigger lenses with me as they are heavy and I do not have the space for them. Someone told me to get a wide angle tamron 18-200 and either a canon 11-18 or 10-22 3.5-4.5 lense. Still looking for ideas. I will be taking landscape photographs and photographs of tourist things such as the great buddah, etc.

I am also going to Machu Pichu and the Galapogas Islands the end of July and August. I can bring anything w/ me as I am going on a tour w/ my husband. I am thinking about bringing both camera's and all of my lenses. Do you think I should just bring one of the two zoom lenses??? If so which on? the 70-200 or the 100-400?? Thanks in advance of any help that I can get. You can tell I am a real rookie when it comes to photography.

I am getting rid of my Tamron 18-200mm because the picture quality is horrible compared to my Canon 70-200mm F4.0L IS. If you already have a Tamron 28-300mm I don't see the benefit of the Tmaron 18-200mm?? For great picture quality the Canon 70-200mm F4.0L IS is half the weight of your current F2.8 version. This gets you a good telephoto reach. For much wider shots the Canon is really pricey and everyone raves over the Tokina 12-24mm. The only problem with this approach is you lose that in between reach of 24-70mm. Maybe I just got stuck with a bad copy of the Tamron 18-200mm, but I couldn't believe the difference in picture quality. With the lenses you already have I think you would be disappointed with the Tamron.

You have a wonderful collection of lenses. Basically you are missing a nice wide angle lens. But for a one lens trip to Japan, I still think that the EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM most convenient and will give you satifactory images.

If you want to L quality, then the EF 17-40mm f4 L USM would be my choice. The Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is worth looking into too. Hope this helps.
