Transferring images to computer

Why can't I transfer RAW photos from my Nikon D70. It will transfer the Jpeg images with no problems, but not high resolution. Are the USB leads different, even though they look the same?

  Charlie,

We need a little more info. What program are you trying to transfer to, etc.?

JPG is a worldwide standard file format. On the other hand, RAW files are proprietary to each camera maker, and are often changed with each new model. Many viewers cannot display RAW files, or need an update to load the latest versions.

Are they not transferring at all, or you just can't view them because you don't have the right RAW converter?

Thank you for your replies. I'm transferring to Picture Project which came with the camera. I've had the camera for 4 years. It sounds like I need to update or get a RAW converter. Can I download from the Web?

The latest version of Picture Project has an auto update function. I think the latest version is 1.7. You should be able to download it from Nikon though. You say you've had the camera for 4 years. Is this a problem that just started? If so, it sounds as thought the program has gotten corrupted some how.

I've just spent the morning trying to download the latest Picture Project without success. Nikon won't accept the serial number of the camera. Is there another photo editing programme I can use? When I first got the camera PP transferred RAW, but then I went back to using film as I couldn't get used to digital. It's only recently I've picked up the Nikon again. As you've probably gathered I'm a bit of a techno-phobe.
As you say PP should update automatically. I can't remember if I registered the camera at the beginning. Would that be neccessary to trigger the updates?

I wouldn't think you would have to register to get updates; but, it is possible. Have you tried to uninstall the program and reinstall it?
