Photography Question

Transfering RAW to photoshop problems

I use EOS viewer utlilty software to process RAW images (I find it easier to use than DPP?) but whenever I transfer them over, the images lose their 'oomph' (saturation / contrast and just about everything). Can anyone shed any light as to why? I've tried changing the color space from sRGB and Adobe 1998 but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Hopefully you can help - it's driving me mad!

From what I understand a raw file is not suppose to have oomph! It is a digital negative and needs to be processed with software for color, white balance, saturation, and contrast. This is the info I got reading on different photography sites. Hope this answers your question. I do not have much experience using raw because I have the same software you do, it came with my Canon 20d but it doesn't seem to recgonize my raw files on the camera. Maybe you could shed some light on how to upload your raw file to your p.c. I use windows xp any advice? I also got the newest camera raw plug in for photoshop and installed it but It won't recognize the raw files only jpeg.

Hi Denise - Thanks very much for your response. My question was that after having processed the RAW image (so giving it the 'oomph', it seemed to lose quality when transferring to photoshop.) From another website, someone has advised it is to do with my colour settings and it should be back to normal in the printing (hopefully!). In answer to your question on uploading the RAW files, I had exactly the same problem with the 20D and DPP / EOS and photoshop all failed to recognise the RAW files. I then bought a CF card reader to transfer the files and it now reads them perfectly! Worth a try?

Thank for the info Rebecca, I actually have an old card reader as well as slots in my computer tower to transfer photos. I just always used my usb. Never thought that it would make a difference. I did find an update for the software (eos viewer 3.1) DPP )on line at a Canon site. And now it seems to be working alright. But if I have problems again I will give the card reader a try.
Thanks again!

If you are using Photoshop why not process using Adobe Camera Raw? I believe it comes with Photoshop CS2. The only problem I ever had was when importing the photos the auto checkboxes were selected which means it tried re-adjusting everytime. Once I unselected those everything was OK.

As for color space changing it will not make a difference on screen. Color space comes into play, for instance, when you post it on the internet. The internet recognize sRGB. Adobe RGB has a larger range of colors available, but a lot of printers will not recognize and do a poor job of converting.

If you do need to change the color space in Photoshop prior to saving an image for use on the internet make sure you use the Convert command.

I have some other info at home that may be more useful that I will try to post tonight if you would like.

Thank you for for your response. I use photoshop CS which I don't think has the RAW software?

The lab I use processes in sRGB so I will keep it as that! Thanks again.
