Tripods and Outdoor Portraits

I have a cheap $30 tripod that I have had forever and used for everything. But have now come to see the light and the benefits of a good tripod. So I have a few questions.

Do you use a tripod for outdoor Portraits (Engagements, Bridals, Family, children)?

Is there a good decent tripod that won't break the bank?

Weight really isn't too much of an issue because I don't plan on hiking anywhere or going on vacation with one. Just something to take to a location. But price is sort of an issue (Can't convince my husband to spend $$$ on expensive equipment when I only do photography as a hobby not a profession).

Hi Tania,
I believe that a good tripod is essential to taking great photos. You also get more options with shutter speed & DOF. I carry it with me always. I use the BOGEN 3021BPRO (about $130) and use the MANFROTTO 322RC2 GRIP ACTION BALL HEAD (about $100) and love the combination. With wedding photography it will make a big difference with portraits but for candids and other shots, it may be too cumbersome and I think you have to be more mobile.
A monopod may also be a good option for a little more mobility. The tripod makes too much of a difference in your photos to not have a good one. I do carry my tripod hiking and on every trip I take. Good luck Tania.
