Photography Question

Ariel Lepor

RAW vs. JPEG

I have read up on the differences between raw and jpeg, and people tell me to shoot in raw, but the benefits of raw truly still evade me.

For example, Jim's picture of his baby http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/big.php?photoID=1415567 was fixed in Camera RAW to get the proper lighting and white balance. However, I took the original picture to the clipboard (jpeg) and was able to get the same colors and lighting.

More channels or bits really means more flexibility?

I've taken pictures in raw and have found no special abilities in changing the colors and lighting, at least using Helicon Filter, which supports raw.

The large file size and longer computer processing time hardly seems worth the minor, if any, benefits from RAW. Am I missing something?

Perhaps in the future I will see how raw helps, but till then, I would appreciate your input.

For me it's about dynamic range. Well worth the trouble, imo.
