Odd issue with Canon 5D recording images

Okay, this is a weird one; in fact, so weird that I cannot find anything on this forum or even in Goggle that provides an answer.

Camera info: Canon 5D; CF card: SunPak Extreme IV – 4GB

Last evening I was out photographing some birds. When I downloaded my CF card and opened Bridge I noticed that several images had recorded only as Jpeg. I also noticed that there was a number gap between images. To clarify: images 2230 -2235 were missing; images 2225-2230 recorded only as low res Jpeg files. Everything before and after this bunch recorded properly. I shoot in RAW with low res Jpeg as backup and for quick viewing. Although my CF card is fairly new, I suspected that perhaps the card had become corrupted, so this morning I switched to another card. The same thing happened again. I didn’t switch any settings or change anything before, during or after the sequencing of each shot. So, any ideas as to what is happening and how to remedy the problem?

Irene

  Hello Irene,
Did you format your card in the 5D before you started taking pics ?
I am not sure about the 5D but if I accidentally switch my 20D camera to auto, it will only shoot in jpg.

I need to get a 4gig card myself, I filled up (3) 2 gig cards in 2 days this last weekend.

What mode are you shooting in?

Often, if you shoot in a mode, and then the dial moves to the green square, you can't shoot RAW on the green square. So, it will, by default shoot JPEGs.

If that's not it, I'm miffed.

  Hi Jerry and Carlton;

I shot all images in manual mode. I have been using the same CF card for some time and have reformatted it several times. I really cannot remember if I formatted it before using it last evening. I did format the other card this morning.

Carlton, check out B&H's prices on CF cards. They have really good prices on the 4 & 8 GB cards right now. They are much less than what I paid even six months ago.

Thanks folks!
Irene

Check the info on the jpegs. They might say something different. The dials are easy to knock around...one thing about this camera I don't like.

Hi Jerry - I tried to check the info on the Jpegs, but no info was written to the card. Yet another thing to puzzle about. This is so odd!

Who Me?
One thing that I remeber is if you try to shoot while it is still buffering, someitmes it will only record as a JPEG. It has even happened with my Mark2n. When I try to shoot to much keeping my finger on the triger after the burst and force it to take a shot as soon as it can. Try another card just see if that may be it.

I think someone else posted recently about a similar problem, but I can't find the thread. It was a similar situation where some image numbers in the middle of a group were missing. I think it was also with a 5D.

The 5D buffer is supposed to handle about 12 frames at the RAW+JPEG setting. Were you shooting fast enough for this to be an issue?

If you were just shooting at normal speeds and some images are getting lost, then it might be some type of firmware problem.

I thank everyone for their input and everything that has been said makes complete sense to me. Unfortunately, none of the ideas put forth seem to apply. I was shooting rapidly and at first I thought that I might have been shooting faster than the capture/write speed. However, the second time this happened I was shooting slower – doing landscape type images. I have now tried 3 CF cards, two were Sunpak and one was Kingsington. The issue has occurred with all cards. But, this morning I was out shooting and everything recorded perfectly. Once again I was trying to capture birds and shooting rapidly; although not faster than the 12fps the camera handles. This is so odd! I checked Canon’s site to make sure that my firmware was up to date and it is fine. I’m going up to my favorite camera shop tomorrow and will ask them if they have any ideas. It may never happen again, or happen today – I just wish I could understand the reasons.
