Photography Question

Suzanne Colson

Buying a Canon 5D maybe?

I am thinking about upgrading from a Canon 30D to a Canon 5D. Other then the obvious: full frame vs 1.6x crop, 12.8MP vs 8.0MP can someone suggest what else I can't live without? In agonizing over the perfect 'L' lens recently I have read quite a few reviews on lens that suggest they have problems on the outer edges of many lenses with the 5D. I certainly can't afford the Mark III right now or anytime soon, but if the full frame is so great why is a new camera from Canon not a full frame?

  Hi Suzanne –

Hi Suzanne –

I own the 5D and find it to be the best camera I have ever used. Of-course, I cannot claim years of experience; however, I did a lot of homework prior to buying and read many reviews prior to making my purchase. Everyone raved about the camera and I certainly do my share of raving. My favorite things about this camera: speed; full frame sensor (and yes, I do think that this matters); amazing clarity and true to life color; easy to use controls; sturdiness of body (important to me since I do mostly outdoor photography); crispness of images; speed – I love that it shoots and writes so fast since I try to capture wildlife images. I’ve never had an issue with lens softness, and have not heard of this being an issue, but then I don’t read a whole lot on line anymore. As to why Canon is releasing a pro level camera without a full frame sensor – I have no idea. It seems nuts to me, but what do I know? I realize that there is great disagreement over the difference that a full frame sensor makes or does not make, but, in my own experience I do believe that the full frame makes a significant difference. I’ve heard rumors that Canon is going to upgrade the camera, but have no idea how or even if this is true. Is the price worth what you get? Only you can judge, but, for me, the answer is YES. Good luck with your decision making.

Irene

Not to argue with Irene, whose comments here and in other threads I respect - but, if the full frame vs 1.6X crop was a problem, why did Canon bring out the 1D Mark III with a lens factor of 1.3X. In other words, why didn't they bring out the new top-of the-line model with full frame?

The issue seems obvious - there's no real need for full frame - for some kind of technical reason. Nikon doesn't offer full frame, nor does Pentax, nor do any other the Wannabees - Panasonic, Sony, etc.

As I've said in many threads, I'll bet you've never used half the capabilities of the 30D. If that's the case, you plan to upgrade, not because you need but because you want the latest and most expensive. Wrong reason.

If I were you I'd, at least, wait for the 1Ds Mark III or what is being described as the 40D.

Speaking of 40D, has anyone really heard that's Canon's on the verge of coming out with one? The 5D and 30D have been out since Oct. 2005, so I think it should be about time for something new in those areas. I want a new camera really badly, but am trying to wait until Canon comes out with something new, besides the Mark III. It sounds like a wonderful camera, but I don't really want to spend quite that much. If you've heard anything, please let me know. I'm chomping at the bit.
