Using Photoshop Elements - Auto Settings

Typically, I will use Photoshop Elements 5.0 to rename my files upon downloading them (using process multiple files option).

Any feedback on using the Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, etc.

I typically do minimal post processing (mostly because of a lack of time!). Is this a reliable option to use or would you not suggest using this option.

Thanks!

  J,

Surely you jest?

Anyone who knows me knows I am not a fan of "auto" anything.

As has been said many times before by many people; adjusting exposure is sometimes necessary, though we try to get it right the first time when we shoot it.

I have never seen a perfect exposure; probably because there is no such thing. LOL

"Auto Levels" rarely gets it right.

I suppose if you shot the exact same photo over and over again that had "average" lighting conditions, Auto Levels might get it right time and again. LOL

"Is this a reliable option..."

No, it is not.

J; why not do some experimenting?
Shoot some sky, clouds, portraits, nature, indoor, outdoor, flash, no flash and see how often "Auto Levels" will make the right decision. I've not done a scientific study; but I would venture a guess Auto Levels gets it right less than 10% of the time.

All the best,

Pete
