Photography Question

Jill Lenkowski

Letting Videographer use Photographers Photos?

I have had a videographer from one of my past weddings contact me about using a few of my photos for his video. I guess he wants to use maybe one for the cover and a few for the actual video.

How do I go about releasing this? Should I even be releasing my images to him?

Thanks for your help!

If it's just one for the cover, just give it to him. This is pretty standard.

It is a good way to network, you may get some referrals from him. Maybe you could mention that to him and that you would do the same.

Maybe see if he could take some business cards of yours to hand out and so forth... Obviously grab some of his.

Who Me?
Interesting that he can't take a still. I had a videographer telling me at the last wedding that he can now print up to 5x7 from a still and soon that videography and photography would merge so you wouldn't need both.

Some will try. But, can you imagine trying to edit a wedding where it was all video, and now you're trying to edit stills from it??? OMG! It's bad enough editing 2,000 or 3,000 frames. Imagine editing 2,000,000,000 frames, or more.

On top of that, video is different. Video will never replace stills. The two things are completely different mediums. I hate that people try to throw them in together like they are the same thing.

Newspapers are using video cams now instead of still cameras, but I can see why they would be doing that. They are more interested in reality.

The reason stills are so much better (IMVHO) is because stills capture a small moment in time, and then portray that in a certain way. Video shows harsh reality. I'll give you an example...I shot a wedding where the bride was pissed and angry all day long. This showed up in a big way in the video, and she hated it because it showed her how much of a bitch she was all day long. But, she loved my images, because there was absolutely no detection of any of that in the stills at all. And, it looked the way she wanted to remember her day.

Think whatever you want, but I believe still photography is far more powerful than video. Obviously, I'm biased (LOL). But, that's my opinion, anyway.
