Wide-Angle Lenses for Canon Cameras

I'm thinking of purchasing a wide-angle lens for my Canon 30D. I already have the 18-85mm Canon IS lens. But I'd like to get lower than 18mm.

I know there's a great L series Canon lens, the 17-40mm.

And I know of the Sigma Wide Zoom EX DC HSM Lens, 10-20mm.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on these two lenses, and if folks have both, which one do you prefer for wide angle.

Thanks.

EF 17-40 is no wider than your EF-S 17-85. The usual suspects for wider than 17mm are EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM, Tokina 12-24 f/4 DX, and Tamron 11-18 f/4.5-5.6 Di II.

Jon...Will any of the lenses you mentioned work on a Canon 5D? Plus, do you still end up with the crop factor. For example, the Tokina 12-24mm? Does it become 18-38mm with a 1.6 crop factor?

I am also wanting a better wide angle for my 30D. I have an older Sigma 15-30 and I am just not happy with the picture quality. So not sure what to do.

  Suzanne,
Of the lenses that Jon mentioned, only the EF 17-40 will work on the 5D. All the others are designed for smaller sensors, like in the 30D.

Yes, the crop factor still applies when using these lenses on the 30D. There's no crop factor on the 5D, but as I said, these lenses won't work with it.

After looking at some of the specs/reviews on the above lenses that are designed just for the smaller sensors they don't seem to be as good as the 17-40L. So I guess it is a matter of choosing between the wide, wide shot or image quality at this point??

Jon, good point about the 17-40mm lens. I'm leaning towards the sigma 10-20. Have read some good reviews about it! Thanks again!

I've narrowed my search to the following. If anyone loves one of these, let me know. I want to use it on the Canon 30D and Digital Rebel.

1. Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX HSM DC
2. Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX
3. Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

The Canon lens seems to be much more expensive. But is it worth it?

Thanks so much!

Ken

I am leaning towards the Tokina because of the fixed aperture. I don't know that it matters as much; especially if light is abundant in what you will want to be shooting. I finally ended up with a fixed aperture zoom lens and love the fact that as I zoom in and out I don't have to worry about aperture and/or shutter speed changing. I don't how much that helps a zoom lens that is that wide, though.

Have you checked out the following sites. I have poured over these over the last month and ended up with 2 lenses I am so happy with:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=40.

It doesn't list the Tokina yet, but the Sigma and Canon are on there.

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

Lists all the ones you are looking at.

And finally:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/

It only lists the Canon you are looking at.

What I found from these site, for me at least, was a wealth of information. I actually understood more about my camera and lenses by the time I was done there then I think anywhere else I was reading and looking. Not even sure if you need the info it provides, but it is out there if you do.

Good luck!!!

By the way, I ended up with a Canon 17-40L only because I just can't shoot that wide yet. It is definitely an art I haven't mastered.

  Hi Ken
I am looking at the Canon and Sigma wide angle options that you were looking at here. I am leaning towards the Sigma. Which lens did you go for?
Lynn
