Photography Question

Background Separation

What is the best way to fix a photo needing separation between dark hair and a dark background? Background light wasn't turned on (mistake) but in LCD I could see the difference in color, but when it goes to print the hair is lost in the background. Help!

That sounds like "the best way to fix" that photo is to retake it. If there's not enough contrast, then there's... well... not enough contrast!

Good luck.

Unfortunately, subjects don't live locally . . . was hoping for a photoshop or other trick. But thanks.

Take your lasso tool (magnetic). Outline the subject the best you can. Now invert it so that only the backround is selected. Now change it in curves or levels and then bring the opacity back to were can see sepration, closer to were you want it. If you could post a picture I can work on it to give you a quick example.

Okay. I will upload a picture and also try what you are saying myself. It's hard to distinguish the hair so is hard to "select." Thanks!

It would take some time, but you could create a layer, then either slowly outline the background, then lighten it or completely change the color. Or create a layer, then erase the background and insert a new one.

The prob is precise selection, Dennis. Like the O.P. says "It's hard to distinguish the hair so is hard to "select"".
For 'distinction' you need contrast. Even if ever so low. But there's GOT to be SOME. At least a hint of contrast. However, not even that is available in the top of her hair in this photo.

Applying curves to a NOT precisely selected background results in a funny 'hairlight' and oooodles of noise...
I don't think my clients would appreciate that.

I understand what (Dennis) is suggesting, but I agree the results are not particularly satisfying. I have Fluid Mask as well, but not that proficient with it yet . . . and even with that it is difficult because again "seeing" and "selecting" the hair is still very difficult. I liked the pic and was hoping to salvage . . . but not sure it is possible. Thanks for all the input!

BTW, I DO see a backlight, Mr./Ms. Armstrong. Only it's not nearly strong enough. If you could double or triple that output there might be enough of a halo to separate the hair from the background.

Well, I have given it a shot at changing the background . . . aslo added some photoshop lighting to the second image. What do you think? Still not sure if it is passable. Certainly won't let myself forget next time!

You did good on those two. Now they're passable. Barely though. And that extra lighting in the second one gives it a spooky atmosphere...

lol! I wasn't going for spooky! lol! But that's okay . . . may have to work on it some more . . . (never played with photoshop lighting much . . .will have to print and see how they look . . . see if we can avoid the trash bin! I prefer my photos exposed correctly right from the camera!

I didn't spend to much time on the tracing, just wanted to give you a rough idea of what I would do if I had to. I think he should have been kissing her or her eyes also open or leaning on his chest. She may be dreaming, but with her head floating like that?

take a picture of the backround by itself. Now play with it just a touch so that when you move the photo over it the cut-out (halo) is not so noticeable.

IF that picture is the "problem" I really like it the way it is.

i would try a layer mask.
here is a tut for that
http://www.photoshopsupport.com/elements/tutorials/extract-hair/masking-tutorial.html
since you used a black background to begin with set the layer holding the mask to screen blend mode, instead of multiply. takes a little refinment but works pretty good. get it right and youcan have any background you want. also more latitude when adjusting, as you can do subjec tand background seperate. happy shooting denny

I thingk you've done the best you can to save this shot.
There is nothing that will truly replace a hair light in this situation.
This can be done on a budget with a slaved flash unit as well.
Wishing you the very best of luck,
Debby
