How to open Nikon NEF Files

I just bought a Nikon D70 and can only opn the files in Picture Project 1.0 (the program that came with it). I want to open the NEF files on my computer - MS Windows 2000. Do I have to purchase a certain software from Nikon OR is there a way to shoot images in JPEG?? (I don't have PS yet).

NEF files are created when your quality setting on your D70 is set to RAW. Adjust your quality setting to FINE to shoot jpeg.

As for opening RAW pictures with your computer, you'll need the appropriate software like Photoshop. Hope that helps.

When you get Photoshop, check out its Camera RAW.

I couldn't live without it!

The newest update of Picassa will open up Nikon Raw images. I don't use Picassa for processing, but I do like it's viewer.
