Photography Question

Antartica photography

I have just signed up for a trip to Antartica next winter and I am wondering about photography. I'm especially curious if I need to buy some special equipment so I can start budgeting for it now. I usually shoot with a Canon Rebel XTi. Any one out there had that experience?

Hi Nancy,

you are travelling by what method? And by "next winter" I suppose you mean Antarctic summer, right?

I envy you. I was there in 2000/2001. It was the greatest trip of my lifetime. On board an exploration ship with about 100 other people: scientists, wildlife researchers, photographers, and crew.
Temperatures rarely get below freezing in the daytime (we even had 2 days of tanning weather – 75 F – on board!).
If you go ashore to the penguin and sea elephant colonies, you will appreciate a good tripod. Since the wind chill factor can be severe, keep your camera inside your coat as long as you don't use it. Just like a spare, charged battery. Keep 'm close to your body, because the fridge temperatures outside can drain 'm real fast.

If you go by ship you will probably have internet available. In that case you need only 2 good (tested) memory cards of, say, 2GB. When one is full you download to a PC on the ship, zip them into huuuge files, and upload to someone trusted back home via http://www.yousendit.com/, or http://www.pando.com. Then delete from the ship's PC.

Thus your photos are already safely back home, no customs officer can impound or delete 'm, your memory card is free again, and you don't need to schlepp around a laptop or portable Photo Storage Device, PSD, and it's charger.

Burn a CD or DVD with apps you might need to, temporarily, install on a PC on board and bring it along.

Have fun!

Thanks for the tips- it will be February. We will be on a ship, I am debating taking my laptop but your suggestion maybe a good alternative.

Nancy
