Photography Question

James E. Narron, Jr.

Selling photos to the media

In light of the recent Va Tech masacre. Maybe this question isn't the first that comes to mind, but the only one that is relevant out here.

What is everyone's opinion about selling photos and/or video clips to the media that are captured in the moment of a crisis or news-worthy moment. Yesterday a student caught a video clip on his cell phone during the shootings. My wife and I had a disagreement about whether CNN purchased the video from the student or if because of the circumstances he just gave it to them and got his 15 minutes of fame. My feeling was if the shot was his then he should have been paid for it. I would feel totally different if it were evidence going to the police or something or course. Basically he was doing the job of a media camerman who couldn't be there at the moment. Shouldn't he be paid as the cameraman would be? My wife and I would like the opinion of phtographers out here on the subject. Thanks!

Jim

Yes you can get paid for supplying photos or video, but if he gave it to them then he gave it to them.
Besides, cell phone video is so low in quality, plus so many people having them, they would look for people to give it to them instead of paying for it.

CNN is making money off of it, so the student should be compensated. It's trajic, but the news networks are still in it to make money and draw advertisers.

I think there'd be an uproar if the news skipped over it and just stayed with weather and sports.
