Wide angle lens

Could some clear something up for me. I read somewhere that a wide angle lens is anything around 24mm. I have a 18mm to 55mm basic lens is the lower classed as a wide angle or not?

Thanks in advance

Anything under 50mm focal length (in 35mm equivalent) is considered 'wide angle'.

The focal lengths that will give wide angle - 45° and wider angle of view - varies with the size of the sensor or film format.

For 35mm film cameras, lenses with focal length shorter than about 45mm are wide angle. For APS-C-sized digital SLRs, (which commonly have 18-55 kit lens), wide angle begins with lenses shorter than 28mm. On a medium format camera (120 or 220 roll film), wide angle lenses are those shorter than about 75mm.

Thanks for your input. My camera is a canon 350d with a 18-55mm lens. So am I right in thinking anything below 28mm is classed as a wide angle. If thats correct I guess its not worth me investing in a wide angle lens in the future.

If you are satisfied with the 64° angle of view that 18mm gives, then yes you do not need wider angle lens. Other users want to get 85° or wider, and get a 12mm-xx or 10mm-xx lens to get there.
