Is it possible to convert a film SLR to a digital?

Is it possible to convert the body of a film based SLR so that image created by the shutter mechanism and lens is then captured in a digital format?

There are digital backs made for medium format cameras and some Leica models, I think.

At one time, I think Kodak made digital backs that worked with some Nikon 35mm bodies, but that was back when 3MP was cutting edge. I don't think anyone is still making digital backs for other 35mm SLR cameras. If they did, they would probably be more expensive than buying a new digital SLR and replacing all your lenses.

What camera and lenses do you have now?

While Chris is correct and kodak did make such backs, Leica offered one for their R8 SLR body more recently. And it cost a bunch, and I don't know if they sold many.

The problem really has to do with dust getting on the CCD - with a DSLR, the unit is pretty much sealed other than for the lens. But a removeable camera back, particularly for a 35MM-type SLR body, is necessarily bulky and unweildy - check out the Leica module. So it's not a piece of cake ot tote about or keep clean.

A few years back, another company announced a "digital film" type product - the claim was that it would be a CCD with memory shaped in the form of a 35MM film cannister plus film tongue. So the concept was you would open the back of your F2, pop in this "digi-film" thing and fire away. But it never really got off the ground - no doubt due to a plethora of technical problems.
