Photography Question

Pamela K. Barrett

How to Start Selling Your Images

I am in the very beginning stages of trying to start an Animal Photography Business.

I went to a Hunting Retriever Club event. I told them I was a serious hobbyist & just wanted to take some pictures. I did not present myself as a pro. However, I would still like to sell some of the images. How should I go about getting the photos into the hands of the members. I plan on giving the folks who got me into the event a couple of free 8x10s & show them some of my other shots. But what about the other members who I would like to sell to. How do I go about marketing to them?

Or, since this is my first attempt at this, maybe I should just let them have the images & chalk it up as a marketing device. Is there anything else I need to do or be aware of?

  Pam,
There are a few ways to consider doing this.
1) If you can take someone else with you and set up a table with laptop for viewing. Then as you can load pics on and run a continous slide show to attract clients.

** at BMX as people saw us there they would pay us for a CD and give us there childs colors and number and we would try to catch as many as pssible with no garentees.

2) another is to get a epson picture mate and print proof sheets of your disks. but this is time consuming and you will not know how many you will need of each disk sheet.

3) set up a free Photo reflect account and hand your cards out to those at match: I ave captured wonderful Action Shots of todays Events
See them at: PamB.photoreflect.com

Now with a photoreflect account you set up the gallery (it includes a photoshop to edit there)
you then pick a lab from all thier chooses(pick one out of state so you don't pay taxes)
you set up what packages they can order.
then when the client logs on they pick what they want , it goes straight to the lab and you can choose wheather the prints go straight to your client or to you for approval.
you get a check every two weeks to a month.
Ok I do believe thats the best I've got.
I do hope it helps,
Debby Tabb

Heres the link to Photoreflect so you can read about it:

Thanks Debby for your great suggestions. That photoreflect web site sounds really neat. I'm definitely going to look at that. I've also figured out how to print contact sheets in Photoshop.
