Problems with AutoFocus on my Canon Rebel

I have a Canon EOS Rebel G, purchased in 1997 I think. I have a problem with the autofocus. I've heard that it is not very good. My camera seems to be worse than some other Rebel G's I've tried (i.e. friends camera's or ones on display in the store). I shoot a lot of children's portraits and almost always have to switch to manual focus. I find the manual focus is so sensitive and hard to use, plus I don't always trust my vision. I wear contact lenses and sometimes after squinting into the camera, my eyes get foggy. I've tried changing the batteries but it doesn't help. Could there be somthing wrong with my camera or is it just this model? Also what camera would you reccommend as a next step up that would have a faster autofocus? Can I use my current telephoto lens (Canon Zoom lens EF 75-300mm) on another camera body? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Amy
