Difference between F4, F3.5 and Brand Types

I currently upgraded from a Canon 350D to 30D, sold all my gear and now look to buy that one perfect lens. I shoot event photography and portrait, in selling my gear I got rid of my sigma 28-200mm DX lens, and now I am trying to determine if I should purchase the 28-135 F3.5 IS USM canon lens or b/c of the amount of event work the 17-85mm IS USM canon lens???? I had a little variance in what I felt were my yellows with the sigma and work with a canon 10-22mm that does not show this coloring. Are lens brands SERIOUSLY DIFFERENT? Is there a perfect fit? The Sigma 18-200?? Geez I am confused, thanks for allowing me your time my friends. ciao.

The lens that cover wide to tele, such as the Sigma 18-200,may be convenient but the image quality suffers at the tele end. You would be better off carrying more lens which do not cover such a great range and the image quality Will be better. Since you do event photography you should consider either a lens with IS or a fast lens with a wide aperture (f/2.8)constant through the focal range.
I use a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and the quality is great w/ a price under $450. I also have a 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens and a Tamron 70-300 which is slightly soft at the 300mmm end but better than the comparably priced Canon. I s*** at portraits, but find that Mother Nature never complains about me having made her look fat or taken her bad side, lol
